Just had this happen yesterday. Started up from a stoplight and clunk clunk clunk. Truck wouldn’t move, threw it in 4wd and was able to pull over to the side, and saw my driveshaft laying in the road.

Sheared the hell out of the u joints and busted the hole.

Does anyone know what may have caused this? Manufacturing defect? My truck is a 2018 F150 5.0 with 118,000 miles. I do have the Stage 3 kit from OZ with the Omega x tune, but I’ve had that on for about 20,000 miles.

Called my dealership. They said the driveshafts are on back order and there were only 4 available in the Country. Thankfully he was able to put in an emergency order and the new one will be here this afternoon.

 

Were you trying to do a burnout?

Doh! Looks like universal joint failure. That sucks dude.

 

For reference, both u joints had that sheared off failure. If you zoom in on the underbody pics, you can see the remnants of the joints in the slip yoke and diff mount.

The new driveshaft is a fully assembled unit, but I’m wondering if I should/can take out the u joints and find some compatible grease able ones to put in

 

These rarely fail. If you are paying out of pocket I would just get one from a salvage yard.

 

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any close enough to me, or any that could get shipped fast enough.

I am however going to call around to shops and see if they can cut the broken end/flange off and install a new one and balance it so I’ll have a spare

 

A spare drive shaft is a waste of money, unless you really are out doing burnouts in your truck. This is an uncommon failure. There was probably a slight manufacturing defect in your U joint that took this long to finally manifest itself.

 

there are usually shops that deal in driveshafts usually custom made.

 

Quick update

Dealership got to looking at it. Rear diff grenaded itself. Nothing but shrapnel. They’re stumped as to what happened. But with the extended warranty it’ll be covered. Only thing I can think of is the locker somehow engaged itself while I was accelerating
