Default Downsizing wheels when going aftermarket?

Have any of you guys gone to a smaller wheel size when switching to aftermarket wheels?

I'm not doing it yet but I do want to go to aftermarket wheels eventually. I currently have the six-spoke 20" Sport wheels, which I like, but I also wish they had some more sidewall.

Since I wouldn't want to go larger than a 33" tire, would it make sense to go with an 18" aftermarket wheel?

I went from the oem 18" to a set of 17" Raptor wheels w/ 285/70/17 K02's and couldn't be happier. Mine a 4x2 stock height and no rubbing issues.

I’ve thought about it a lot and probably will when my KO2s wear out. I would have when I recently replaced my oem hankooks, but I wasn’t in the position to pony up $750 for fuel 17”s. From what I have seen 18” wheels are going to have slight more restricted sizes for tires vs a 17, which is why I was going to go the 17 route.

Sidewall comparison fyi

Well, I'll have to look around. The particular wheels I'm digging right now (Method MR301 Machined) are available in 17, 18 and 20 inch. TBH, looking at tires I'm not seeing a lot of difference in price between 17's and 18's.

edit: So for some reason...with these particular wheels I can find the 20's cheaper than the 17's or 18's. And the 17's and 18's are also harder to find in stock. Weird.

I went from 20" PVD wheels on my Platinum to 18" Methods for a lot of reasons:

1) more sidewall means better ride and better wheel protection
2) more and cheaper tire options
3) people will pay more for used 20" OEM wheels/tires than what brand-new aftermarket wheels cost
4) it's a truck

I wouldn't go back to 20" wheels... not until I sell it/trade it.

I specifically wanted these 20" sport wheels when I was truck shopping (just so happened this truck had them) but yeah, looking at aftermarket I'm thinking 17's or 18's. Right now I'm liking the aforementioned Method Standard but I also like the Mamba M14, both in machined finish. Both nice non-bro looking wheels that are available in a 17.

I went from the stock 18s to 17s. Tires are 285/70R17, so a size smaller wheel, with a slightly taller and wider tire, I wanted something that for sure would not rub or require trimming at stock height and these fit the bill.

By going with 17s the tires and wheels were much more affordable and with more sidewall, all while staying close to OEM weight too. I do prefer the look of most 18s though and I really think 20s look great on a lifted truck with a much larger tire.

FWIW, those factory Sport 20s you have are my favorite of the oem wheels. If only they would make a replica set of those in say 18s or 17s... I'd definitely change wheels again lol.

Nice setup. How much error in your speedometer now? I've been looking at the Cooper tires in a 17 as well. Can we get a picture of your truck?

Not sure how much error in the speedo, these are I believe ~32.7" tall and the Michelins I removed were ~32.1"
