Does this sound normal?
I agree scalloped tires can make a lot of noise, but I am certain this isnÂ’t my case. Been whining since around 800 miles on Truck with Michelin LTX. Noises has been isolated as coming from rear even after tire rotation. Truck now has around 5800 miles on it.
I can manipulate the whine when slightly accelerating / decelerating. Not necessarily gain / decrease speed, but more of a torque / no torque ( hope that makes sense ), however at around 60 -70 MPH it tends to be constant. At slower speeds of 40 – 50 MPH it seems to whine more so under deceleration.
Beings my pinion angles is out severely I was hoping dealer would correct the angles with possibility of eliminating the noise. However the dealership has basically refused to check the angles even after I told them I had personally checked angles myself and know they are out. Trans down @ around 4.5° , pinion up @ around 1.7° and drive shaft @ 5.8°, Working angles of 1.3° and 4.1°. After 5 visits over vibration and whining noise….. they still refuse to check angles ( Said he don’t have the tool and doesn’t think the angles have anything to do with vibration ). Service manager finally acknowledge the whining noise and said he would check with Ford and get back to me. I have not heard back from him and it’s been several weeks.

EdB, what was the corrective action you got your dealer (subsequently Ford) to take on your rear diff howl? Your audio clip haunts me because I have the same exact sound ever since they replaced my rear differential ring and pinion due to a harsh vibration during deceleration. The howling occurs when I just tip in to the throttle (like engine, transmission, axle driveline neutral torque state), and from an audible frequency perspective is most appalling/intrusive/unacceptable at interstate speeds 65-80 mph) where perfectly inconveniently I do most of my driving. I’ve operated 100’s of other daily drivers/rentals and owned a pile of them too... not one has ever made any driveline differential ring and pinion gear whine/howl, nor did mine prior to replacement.
Truck is a mid-year 2016 Platinum, 3.5 EB, 3.55 e-locker, 18,880 miles.
For other experienced forum users, I welcome any and all guidance and apologize if this is more thoroughly covered and resolved in another thread.
After all of the other time wasting and frustration generating quality issues I’ve had with this truck, this noise is so intrusive that it may be the nail in the coffin for me with it. I’ve never owned anything but Ford vehicles and have been a huge brand promoter to the point family members and friends have abandoned other brands and taken a risk with FoMoCo, but I’m about to cut and run, and will be eating crow for years to come. Extremely frustrated. Thanks all.

BTCRUZR, first of all I apologize for such a late reply. Several months ago, I filed a suit against Ford over damage to my truck. The dealership kept giving me the run around. I hadn’t said much since this post due to the suit. https://www.f150forum.com/f118/drive...amaged-385899/
As far as the whine / howl goes, my dealership would never acknowledge hearing the noise. I have had it test driven by a few friends and one of those friends is a GM Technician for several years and a well-known mechanic in my area. His opinion as well as others is ring / pinion whine. More than likely from improper backlash setting or bad ring and pinion gears. I am betting this noise will not go away and possibly worsen in time / miles.
You stated they changed your ring and pinion gears. Hopefully they shimmed everything to get proper backlash adjustments. Is the harsh vibration gone?
I still have my truck and only around 13K miles on it. This whine / howl is still there and has become constant @ 68mph. I can tell you with in 1 Mph ( 68mph – 69mph ) without looking when I hit 68 Mph . The noise will appear and disappear at other speeds and can be manipulated by SLIGHT acceleration / deceleration. Just enough to load or unload torque. I have been told by many to take it to another dealership, however with the suit going on and from what Attorney was telling me, I was confident Ford would be taking this truck back. However, it didn’t work out that way. There was a very small settlement which after paying Attorney, I may have enough to repair the damage myself. I totally understand your frustration and feel your pain.
Can’t believe the time that has passed here, but I thought that I would follow up and give some closure for anyone else that stumbles into this thread. After months of kicking and screaming to anyone and everyone that would listen, the dealer service manager that recently took the position decided to step up and replace the ring and pinion again. I had the tech take videos of the backlash setup with the dial indicator zero’d and then rocking it back and forth (.010). Lo and behold......the new, properly setup ring and pinion are completely silent!! Shocking I know. Anyway, just thought I’d follow up.
