If you don't turn loose of it I reckon you'll put it back in the way it came out.

It should always be facing north in order to send a proper reading to the instrument panel.

The hash marks should always be facing the front of the vehicle. During acceleration the oil will be held within the depressed lines of the hash marks. If reversed, the oil will be pulled from the lines, causing a check engine lite, as the ecm will think the engine is out of oil and go into limp mode.

You pulled the dipstick out??? I would immediately trade this truck in for a new one and never, ever pull the dipstick out again.
