Default Difference between Magnaflow mufflers

Looking for a little information from anyone that has done this before.

I'm looking to replace my stock muffler on my '18 5.0 with something that gives me a little more sound but also doesn't break the bank! I know we don't pick up any power (not enough to warrant almost $1K price tag) with a cat back exhaust so that's not what I'm concerned about. I want a little extra sound without being obnoxious. I am looking at 2 different Magnaflow mufflers. The 12249 and the 12279. Only thing I can see from their website is the length is different. Will that cause the sound to be different? Which one will fit in place of the stock muffler easier? I've seen that these are popular on this forum just trying to get a little more info.

Comparing these 2, guys said the 12279 had less drone with it being larger, but that the sound was pretty much the same otherwise.

Quite a few people have recommended the Borla ZR1 40085 muffler instead of the Magnaflow. I can't speak to that - I did order a Magnaflow 12249, but don't have it installed, and am most likely going to exchange it for the Borla.

I'd love to hear the differences between the 2. Wonder if anyone has any sound clips??

I've spent quite a bit of time watching youtube videos comparing the 3, but ultimately, every video sounds different since there are so many variables in the recordings (phone model, proximity to the exhaust, wind noise, etc)

I've had both. See sound clips below. *disclaimer* wind noise is bad on both videos but gives an idea.

My review is that the 12279 does help some of that highway drone compared to the 12249.
Magnaflow is pretty notorious for the really deep tone especially under load in the 1600-2000 rpm range.
Funny because my truck actually seems quieter (inside the cab at least) past 2000 rpm than it is around 1800 rpm.
I've tossed 2 extra resonators to try to combat this.

Personally I like the sound of the Magnaflow mufflers. Most have a deep mellow sound to them that's not too obnoxious. The longer the muffler is the deeper the sound, shorter will be more raspy. I have a 12589 on my 2018 5.0 with the stock resonator removed, which is a 5x11x22. I don't have any exhaust sound clips right now, but I can get you one in about 2 weeks if you want. I found that it droned quite a bit at highway speeds. Since then I added an MBRP resonator that is 4x20. Keep in mind that when you first install it, it wont be that loud. Magnaflow does have some break in time.

Hi Bsrobins, both mufflers will offer a big improvement in tone, but the main difference is that the 24" long (12279) will be about the same volume level as stock, while the 18" (12249) will be a step louder. I've had a Magnaflow 12249 installed for about 18 months now. IMO the noise in the cab isn't bad. You can hear it but the drone is almost non existent with resonator. Without resonator the drone is bad, almost undriveable.
