CVT?
Reading all the posts in this thread, its amazing how people who have no knowledge about CVT transmissions are such critics. I was lambasted a bit some time ago for suggesting CVTs in trucks. Its nothing new, its been going on as I said then for decades in European trucks...large trucks. CVT transmissions have far less moving parts than a conventional transmission and are far more reliable. Nissan is not the pioneer of these however has been a very large proponent of them equipping them in a large number of their vehicles now. Honda, Mitsubishi, even Ford...see the list here.

I have had three vehicles with CVT transmissions and have never had a problem with any of them. Performance was great as was gas mileage.
Nissan is so confident, it now warranty their CVT transmissions for 10 years.
Ill take a CVT transmission any day. Especially over a Dodge transmission of the 1990s.

Yeah If they went planetary or IVT CVT that would be great but most manufacturers seem to only want to stick around VDP or toroidal CVT which is limited. Tractors run planetary IVT's or or hydrostatic CVT's which are very good at handling torque (gears and not friction based variable pulley) but they have the size advantage. From what I remember these transmissions need a fair bit of room which is available in a tractor. Could be wrong though but I believe that's why they haven't made the step to light trucks/suv's. That's what advancement is for however!
I think towing with a cvt could has some awesome benefits. One huge one is just the lack of shifting. Its pretty hard on a tranny to shift under a heavy load. Driving huge trucks for work, that's our law, we never shift on hills unless we have to. Plus not having that break in power so you can shift will help with steep climbs.
