Current SYNC 3 and CarPlay/Android Auto Information
Just wanted to report a successful install of 2.2 non-nav.
I used a tack puller (looks like a screwdriver with a forked end) to remove the module. Put in the new module before starting the install.
Used an old crappy USB stick (4gb) that I got as a promotion from somewhere.
Didn't even reformat it - just erased all the files first. I was working on a Windows 10 PC.
Followed the ReadMe file that came with the download and it worked flawlessly.
As to why Ford hasn't released this - I bet it comes down to economics.
1) they don't want people making noise about wanting the upgraded USB Module for free - How many 2016 vehicles would that be? And the dealer charges back to Ford to replace them?
2) I'll bet their auto update over WiFi software won't handle the non-nav 2 part install. And they have been unable to get it into a single install. So they would have to replace the install code inside the vehicles and that may be in permanent memory - not re writable memory. ie - they may not be ABLE to change the install code.
3) Only option would be to send dealers 2 USB drives to use in upgrading customers vehicles - given how long that takes it would cost Ford a fortune in labor fees.
So basically - when they promised Sync 3 would support CarPlay they didn't know they were going to have to replace the USB Modules and they didn't know they couldn't update automatically over WiFi.
Now that they do know - their best option from a cost and PR angle is just to ignore it.
That's why I went ahead and did my own.

Mine was built Dec 2015. I had no problem. I did it all off my mac mini computer and an 8 gig cruz usb stick. Mine has nav, so it was just one file and 20 minutes later all done while driving down the road.
Hope you get it working. But all in all it really isn't worth doing anyway. After a couple days of using Car Play I turned it off and have been using Sync ever since.

I bought the USB module and tried it both ways. when installing the USB it gives an error on the display that the USB are not compatible, BUT they still work just fine. I removed the USB because I've read multiple posts where the v2.2 was done BEFORE the USB module was installed.
I did this upgrade the day after it became available. I have a Non-Nav Sync3. My truck was built Jan 2016. I used a 8GB older flash drive and followed the instructions to the letter, and the install worked the first time. I'm not sure if you guys are getting the README file that came with the original files or not, so I thought I would post it here again. Who knows, it just might help somebody.

I wanted to get something written up for those 16+ F-150 Owners to have some quick reference to.
SYNC 3
Version 1.0 - Initial Release Version - Does not contain Android Auto/CarPlay
Version 1.1 – Early update for Version 1.0 to correct minor bug issues
Version 2.0 - Only available on late build models of the 2016 F-150 (roughly July 2016). Version 2 does contain Android Auto (fully functional) and CarPlay (non functional). This is also standard on early build 2017 models. There is no official 2.0 update that I know of.
Version 2.2 – This was initially released as an update for some 2016 Lincoln models in Dec. 2016 As of writing this on 3/26/17 I am not aware of it being officially released for updating any Ford models. In Feb. 2017 I noticed that most Fords/Lincolns are being shipped from the assembly line with 2.2 in them. Version 2.2 does contain CarPlay/Android Auto.
You are able to check your version by going into the General icon and then About menu item. The version is listed at the top and not to be confused with gracenote or navigation version.
For those that have a 2016 Ford F-150 with V2.0 in it, the reason CarPlay does not work is because a CarPlay compliant USB hub is not installed in the vehicle. Hubs GJ7Z-19A387-B (white backlighting) and HC3Z-19A387-B (blue backing) are CarPlay compliant USB hubs that are a direct fit into the 2016 F-150. After some experimenting, the hub can be removed with a basic plastic trim tool without having to take anything else apart. Use a thin plastic pry tool and slide it under each side (short sides of the hub) and give it a little twist to get that side to pop out and then do the other end. You may need to hold the already released side out as it will want to pop back in. Make sure not to stress the wiring harnesses connected to the usb hub.
If further information pertaining to this topic is received I will attempt to update this original thread. I would like to ask that opinions about Apple versus Android be kept out of this and the keep the topic on task.
LIST OF CONFIRMED CARPLAY COMPLIANT USB HUBS THAT FIT 2016 F150:
GJ7Z-19A387-B (WHITE BACKLIGHTING) via JMR061
HC3Z-19A387-B (BLUE BACKLIGHTING) via KOMANDREW
I will not post links to the DL any SYNC3 update files as those seem to be constantly changing. You are on your own for that. There are separate update files for non-nav versus nav. No you can't add factory nav to a non nav unit this way.

Need usb ONLY for I phones (apple), usb for android is good to go ,,,,been complaining for months about NO update for my 2016 XLT F-150 ,,,, went out to VA today and all the the sudden I have ANDROID AUTO in my settings , have not married yet . Had to come in and update MY app on my Samsung S7 - will follow up on this.
mine updated through my WIFI . my SYNC is set on auto update .
And to mention for the people that cracked sync , or bought NEW front face with NAV - when ford sends update - ford gives updates using your VIN and if truck did not come with is , it gets eraced . pretty sure of this.
I tried every thing people sugest , There is no such thing as download, or paying ford for it TRIED ALL , OTA over the air ?
