You must be shopping at the wrong place. I've never paid more than $20 for any name brand full syn and fl500s filter.

Motorcraft. Dealers get oil and filters at bulk wholesale pricing, and bringing customers in for cheap oil changes creates opportunity for more profitable work. For that price I'm happy to let them do it.

Some states require shops to accept used fluids from DIYers, to keep it out of landfills, storm drains, that dead spot in the back yard, etc.

Yep I return oil all of the time to Walmart, not sure if they take antifreeze!

to drain and fill yourself will take several cycles. I would explicitly ask them - are you using a machine to completely flush/remove all of the old coolant?

Name brand full synthetic runs around $28 for a 5 qt jug at Walmart, which is the cheapest place in town. I need almost 8 qts for my 5.0, so call it $45 for the oil, plus around $8-$10 for a good synthetic media filter.

Yeah, I figure a lot of shops use oil changes as a loss leader.

It varies by location. Where I am, Advance is the only place that will take antifreeze. Autozone will take any kind of oil - motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, gear oil, hydraulic oil. It all goes in the same tank.

This is one of thise that for me, makes sense for the dealer to do.

On the other hand, if you have the desire, means for collection and disposal, do it your self.
Cleanup and disposal is easy for a drain and fill. But I have no interest in doing a true flush, which basically amounts to seven or eight sequential drain and fills.
