Default Core Charge??

I recently had to purchase a new taillight for my truck thanks to some at the airport. My dealer charged me a $50 core charge until I brought the old one back in the box the new one came in. When I questioned this they told me Ford requires it now to help keep parts out of the hands of those looking to duplicate their products.

Has anyone else run into this? Seems a bit useless to me.

I could see it maybe if the taillights had sensors in them for the blind spot monitoring deal, or whatever. Otherwise, seems goofy.

So it would cost someone looking to duplicate a product $50 to get there hands on one. Yep, I see how that will completely halt the practice. Sounds like BS to me.

sounds like the parts guy is a drug user... Wants the old part in the new box so he can put it back on the shelf as a return and pocket the money. And if you don't bring it back he still gets your 50 bucks. Tell the manager. He needs to go.

Ok weird. Just checked eBay. A ford dealer selling states they have a core charge too. There has to be a reason.

I had that happen to me about 2 years ago in Houston. I backed into a pole and cracked the FX4 tailight housing. I couldn't believe they were charging me that. The parts guy said that Ford was enforcing these rules because it would get people to return the cores keeping them out of the hands of the Chinese longer. Basically, trying to protect their share of the OEM replacement parts market. Weird, but whatever. I didn't need a broken taillight lying around nor do I ever mind an opportunity to check out the customized trucks on the lot.

No big deal. Turn it in and get the core charge back. End of story.

What part sounds like BS. Man, do all of you "Senior Members" even get out in the vehicle parts world anymore? Do you drive anything brand new? Theyre nothing like the vehicles before 2010 maybe even a little earlier. And in all my real time, real life research, the core charges are on used parts, so they can get the old part back and rebuild it or use parts from it to rebuild another part. But to replace a brand new part, its just to give either the buyer a discounted price, or the retailer, dealership a discounted price. Ive spoken to the Corporate Vehicle Manufacturing company of Ford, they, must be telling lies, when they say, they dont get involved with the buying and selling of cores, rebuilds, remanufactured parts, that its all on the dealership and the people that make the accessories etc... that the company does not interven in how these individual independently owned and operated businesses conduct business. Why do you thay call BS on the rest of us for inquiries, need to come across as ridiculing or attacking? Grow up. Accept, you dont necessarily know it all or possibly just havent been put in the same position YET.

If he is the one to get the core charge back. I wasnt. Nor a discount. But was told by someone here, how it made sense, but the people i dealt with in person couldnt, wouldnt didnt tell me.
actual cost 7k, but told me it was 6k, and had to return the core, or i could pay 1k to keep the core. When asked if it was discounted to me or credited, they said no. But in reality once i finished my research, thats exactly it. They were being charged 6k, getting it for 5k with my core return, so they sold it to me for 6k and kept the 1k core charge, fee, credit, discount whatever you want to call it, for their business.
