Converting a Non-Navigation APIM to a Navigation APIM
In my last thread I post my conversion from a 4.2” to 8” touch screen. That project turned out good in the end. Now I wanted to convert to a navigation screen on a budget. I started by reading Acool’s thread https://www.f150forum.com/f122/sync-...rboard-411139/. On page 3 of the post Airborne Ape showed an alternative place to purchase the part necessary to convert the APIM to navigational. I started out by going to AliExpress and the search took about an hour to find what I was looking for. This is what I purchased.
Once I reinstalled the APIM and screen in the truck it booted up as a Ford Escape. I then did a master reset and found that this is what was preloaded on the new navigation motherboard.
Prior to ordering the new motherboard I had downloaded the 3.0 Update from the ford website. With a little ForScan magic I flashed a newer firmware to the APIM and then updated to using a usb thumb drive. I drove the truck around for a week to see if I would like SYNC 3.0 or if I would be updating to SYNC 3.4. In my previous APIM I had bypassed 3.0 and went directly to 3.4.
Well it turnouts I miss SYNC 3.4. In 3.0 I can make it 2 blocks from my house before the screen boots up and has a display. I prefer the light blue screen and icons better as well. I visited https://www.f150forum.com/f118/upgra...ctions-458828/ which was posted by Airborne Ape and downloaded folder 2. This is the results.
Now I have SYNC 3.4 and 2019 maps. I have used the GPS feature both for work and personal travel and I am very pleased with the results.
