Default Converting 4WD to AWD.

Is this the solution to converting your XLT to a Lariat by giving you all wheel drive capability?

I have a 2018 XLT and would love to have all wheel drive capability like my friends lariat or a raptor. If this is the solution then why is it not all over this site?

Because it is the solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Back in the late 1970's and early 80's almost all 1/2 ton trucks were AWD with a locking center diff to get you to true 4X4. You couldn't buy a Chevy, Dodge, or Jeep truck with traditional 4X4 and it was a special order option from Ford. The fad lasted about 10 years and most were glad it went away.

The transfer case is part of the needs for automatic (not awd) 4x4, but it will not make your truck a Lariat.

It will however make your XLT a lot more expensive and give you he ability to not pay attention during inclimate weather conditions....in my own opinion.

I've seen one or 2 posts about the conversion. I think due to the amount of time and money, people don't do it because turning the dial 1 click to 4x4 is as easy as turning the dial one click to 4a.

I never understood the difference between 4x4 and AWD except that AWD vhicles seem to have limited slip up front so it doesn't chirp or feel funny when you turn.

Does using that transfer case do something similar? My truck feels way different with 4wd on. I can't imagine my 2004 feeling that way all the time and liking it.

4WD all wheels turn .. AWD power gets transferred when slip is detected .. then you have different variants that will transfer to the opposite wheel and so forth

some AWD are front wheel biased some are rear wheel biased

i'm assuming here because i don't have 4A

4A .. detects slip.. turns on all 4 wheels.. no slip detected .. goes back to 2 wheels
AWD .. detects slip .. transfers power to front wheel if its RWD biased ... transfers power to rear wheels if its FWD Biased

then you have XDrive .. Quattro ... 4 matic .. and all those different systems are totally different from the others .. i remember seeing a test with same tires.. same conditions against the big 3 German platforms and the Quattro killed them

found it

If you have a lower trim with just 4x4 and not 4A, 100% you should convert. It is well worth the time and money. You will use 4A a lot more than 4x4 unless you commonly drive off-road. You can leave it in 4A 100% of the time and let it do its thing. It is a no-brainer!
