Hello folks, I am considering a new truck in the next few months. My daily drive is about 3 miles total and an occasional trip (once a month) to the deer lease hauling an atv. I currently have an xterra that I really like, it's small, great for whatever off-roading I might do, and drives great. My previous truck was a Titan. I loved it, it was sporty, looked good, and very reliable. I really like the responsiveness of the Nissan motor/transmission setup.
I really like the new f150 and probably lean towards the 5.0 version. However, which motor would you recommend for my driving habits few miles, light towing, preferably something a bit peppy. I am concerned with the ecoboost and having such a short daily drive....heck I don't even get up to temp on most days.
I'm also considering a new tacoma, but gm trucks are a big no go until they resolve a few issues.
Thanks,
Bisley.

If you make a decision too early, you'd better hang on to your Xterra, for backup transportation.

Considering a new truck
I am very pleased with my 5.0, it's fairly simple and once it is out of warranty it will be a breeze to work on. There is no engine cover and evrything you would ever need to get to is very accessible. I have plenty of power and decent mileage

Don't do the Tacoma, I bought mine in 07 instead of a half ton and regret it all the time. The fuel mileage isn't really any better, they are WAY more expensive than a half ton for what you get and the whole resale argument is bs when you consider how much more you pay upfront (pay me now or later...). The capabilities of the Tacoma are so much less than a half ton and believe me when I say you will appreciate the extra space, especially if you have kids.

No kids, just me and the wife plus a Lab.
Well low to mid 40s for a Ford vs low 30s for a tacoma.
I live in the middle of Little rock, Ar and most of my driving is in town. I appreciated the monuverability of a slightly small rig. My lifted Titan was a royal PITA driving downtown.

Price it again.
My local dealers were within $1,000 of each other for this:
2016 Tacoma TRD Sport. Double Cab, Short Bed 4x4. Only option was the Automatic trans.
2015 F-150 XLT. SuperCrew, 2.7L, 4x4, 302A, Trailer package, 3.55 Locker.

All new 3.5L motor with more HP and less torque than the old 4.0. Peak torque also moves way up the rev range. Depending on trim level, the 2016 gets a $3-5k price hike over the 2015 and yet keeps C-channel rear frame, drum rear brakes, and 4 way manual adjustable seats. Power isn't ever available on the 40k Limited.
Price it again.

OK, maybe I should restate my question in a different manner.
Considering such a short commute would it be preferred for one motor vs another. I have heard many reports of the EBs fouling up heads and condensation issues. Considering that I never get on the interstate, would that give cause for concern?

Now that I'm retired I don't drive much except to take the kids to school, so with that stated I have the 5.0 and with the sport mode on most of the time it makes the short trips to school fun and very peppy. More than anything I enjoy the 385 HP from the 5.0 when I need to pull out it doesn't hesitate to haul *** true to when needing to get around someone.
My buddy has the eco and that is the one thing he states he misses is the push you back into your seat and haul *** when you need it feeling.

Price...whoa. Anything more than a 4cyl 2wd stripper is mid $30's - $40+. Sure you can get a much nicer better equipped F150 for more, but comparably equipped, the F150 is significantly cheaper when the incentives are good.
Their new V6...OMG that 3.5 has NO business being in a truck. It was the most gutless turd I have driven in a LONG time. All it's power really is way up high. Driving around normally, it feels like a 100hp no tq 4cyl if even that! You have to put the pedal thru the floorboard for it to get out of it's own way. Couple that with how much smaller the truck is, the MPG numbers are shockingly low!
Anyhow...of course everyone knows how much smaller and all a Tacoma or any of the rest of these small trucks are...and it would of been expected for it to be a bit on the pricey side for what you get as well as having cheap yet solid materials, boring, etc it being a Toyota.....but I really don't know what they were thinking with this 16 Tacoma. If it wasn't from a brand with such a loyal following, I'd venture to say it would be a complete flop if put out by anyone else!
