Considering a new truck
 

Hello folks, I am considering a new truck in the next few months. My daily drive is about 3 miles total and an occasional trip (once a month) to the deer lease hauling an atv. I currently have an xterra that I really like, it's small, great for whatever off-roading I might do, and drives great. My previous truck was a Titan. I loved it, it was sporty, looked good, and very reliable. I really like the responsiveness of the Nissan motor/transmission setup.

I really like the new f150 and probably lean towards the 5.0 version. However, which motor would you recommend for my driving habits few miles, light towing, preferably something a bit peppy. I am concerned with the ecoboost and having such a short daily drive....heck I don't even get up to temp on most days.

I'm also considering a new tacoma, but gm trucks are a big no go until they resolve a few issues.

The new Tacoma looks sweet. I would have considered it, but Ford Credit always gives me better deals. I'm pleased with my 2.7L Ecoboost so far with about 1,200 miles under my belt.

I would keep what you got for what you need. Xterm more nimble off-road. If you want f150, all engine choices would work well for you. Just depends what you want in that 3 mile drive. Lol

Before you consider a Tacoma drive it for awhile, all of them I have road in (including my 04') the seats are so uncomfortable. Hate the seats besides that they are great trucks. As for the F150 the 3.5L has plenty, from what I read more people gave up on the 5.0 for the 3.5 for towing.

The 2.7 EB sounds perfect for you. I would not be afraid of the turbo's - they've been going into cars for years.

Definitely the 5.0.

I suppose I should say that my biggest worry would be that such a short drive everyday would be detrimental to the ecoboost motors?

The xterra is great but the miles are starting to get up there and my wife wants me to get something nicer...who am I to argue!

I Have a 5.0 in my 13 and really like it. My friend (ford sales) told me if we by anything turbo, buy the extended warranty!

I had heard the new Tacoma was suppose to have the Tundra drive line????

I'd stay away from a first year engine set-up (2.7L), wait till all the issues have been worked out with that. A V6 engine in a full size truck, no thanks. I don't care if you twin turbo it or not; still too much for a 6 cyl engine. The 5.0L engine has been around for more that 50 years...hard to beat the longevity of that. And if it so moves you, drop a blower in that V8 and watch the real magic begin.

I get what you're saying about a first year engine (2.7) and being a little cautious.

A V6 engine in a full-size truck has been proven to work fine. Not everybody uses their trucks the same way. I don't get your statement regarding a truck being "too much" for even a twin turbo V6. How so? The fact I get 20+ MPG in my twin turbo V6 and I'm not screaming in 3rd gear just to hold 70MPH tells me this engine is plenty for the truck. I get it. Some people will never get over putting a V6 in a truck. Modern engines be damned.

The 5.0L V8 has been around a long time. The current 5.0L V8 has not been around more than 5.

I'm not opposed to having a V8 in a truck. If my usage changes and I feel that is the best engine choice for what I do, I'd get it. Throwing out blanket statements on engines based on personal opinion doesn't assist another person's decision making. Anymore, if you need a V8 you might as well get a diesel.
