Default Considering an ecoboost - what gas?

I currently drive a Chevy, 2002 with almost 330k miles on it. Needless to say, I expect a lot of miles out of a pickup.

I now have a 6.7 f350 in the family for towing - no f150 is towing the trailers we pull now, but I need to replace the Chevy for a daily driver. My driveway and hobbies are such that a 4x4 pickup works well..

My number one considerations in the 1/2 ton pickups I'm looking at are longevity and mileage. I am seriously looking at a 2014 3.5 or a 2015 2.7 ecoboost, with the latter being my preference if they get to dealers before my Chevy dies.

What kind of gas do we need to use in the ecoboost to maximize longevity and mileage?

As far as longevity goes I don't think it matters. The ignition system will run as much timing advance as it can for whatever octane is in the tank. Usually for unloaded cruising regular octane is the ticket for best MPGs. If under heavier loads whether towing, hauling, in the mountains, or just aggressive driving then mid and premium octanes can yield better results. Regardless you obviously want to run good quality fuel and not just the cheapest stuff in town.

Also keep in mind that the 3.5 eco is a 4 (almost 5) year old engine platform that has had all that time to work out the bugs. The 2.7 will be a first year production. While I prefer the v8's, if I were going to pick an eco it would definately be the 3.5. It will have more power just in case you decide to pull a boat or any other trailer. You haven't said what cab configuration you are wanting to go with.

Thanks for the insight!

This will be a super crew FX4, 4x4, probably Lariat.

With that trim, the only two engine options you would probably have in 2015 would be the 5.0 or the 3.5TT. More than likely just the 3.5 since it's a high end trim. In a 2014 FX4 you could probably get the 6.2, but you wouldn't be getting stellar gas mileage. Lol. Otherwise it would be the 5.0 or 3.5TT.

Correct, according to the Ford ordering/pricing guide, the 2.7EB is standard on the Lariat Base and Lariat Mid, but only on the 4x2. The 5.0LV8 is standard on all Lariat models (Base, Mid, Lux) in 4x4. The 3.5EB is optional in all Lariat models.

I think the 2.7 is the star of the lineup! I can't believe it isn't offered in higher trim trucks. It is plenty capable for 90% of people. Even Dodge lets you get the EcoD in their highest trim trucks.

I am going to have to stay far away from the dealerships when these things hit the pavement...

Hmmm, interesting. I wouldn't think that it (2.7tt) would be in as high of a trim as lariat. Then again, ford did change their trim levels a bit. Like making the FX4 a package now instead of its own trim. I'm just not sure on a first run engine. I'm hoping they learned from the mistakes of the big brother, but it's still a first year run for the little TT.

I was just able to build a 2.7 Lariat in 4x4 super crew, but only with the 5.7.

I guess we will see if this is legal soon!
