Default Considering 2.7 for DD

I have read multiple threads in regards to the 2.7 and MPG and reviews, but have yet to come across the topic of the 2.7 being someones daily commuter in a major city.

I drive from Canton to Buckhead(Atlanta) everyday, 70 Miles round trip. Morning I hit no traffic. Afternoons I could be in bumper to bumper for 15 (45 min) miles before I finally hit an open road.

Has anyone with the 2.7 driven in a similar commute and if so how do your MPG look and with what gears. I am looking at the 2.7 3.31 Supercrew

I used to have a truck but reluctantly switched to a Chevy Cruze and am over it. I'm ready to fork over a bit more in gas to drive a truck again. well worth the $.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated or if you wanted to forward me to a similar thread as well.

How long are you keeping it and how much capability do you actually need? 2.7 appears to deliver if you generally don't drive with a heavy foot, and is certainly quick for what it is when you do need to get on it. I am still in shopping mode myself. Since all 4 engines are suitable for what I need personally, MPG as a daily driver is a def concern, as well as fun factor. What tips the balance for me is that I also want something that will rack up the miles over a decade with minimal fuss. I have scratched any ecoboost as an option due to this and am more concentrated on the 3.5na now. Sure some fun factor is lost, but looks like it slightly edges out 2.7 in real world use according to fuelly, and most importantly to me, a MUCH simpler engine which stands a better chance of lasting a decade. Besides the direct injection which may or may not cause some valve problems for some people with age, or turbos dying, there is FAR more potential for leaks and such on the 2.7 with the 2 piece block, water cooled exhaust manifolds, the additional lines and components of the turbo setup, etc. I would say if you are only going to keep the truck the typical few years or so then def get the 2.7. If you are going to keep it for the long haul, def get one of the NA motors. My 2 cents.

Travel ~40mi a day in similar situations and average 19mpg.

Lariat 2.7 in 3.55gears super crew.

Can not go wrong with it!

2.7L with 3.55 electronic locking 4x4 super crew, I make about a 25-30 mile trip each way to work I'd say about 65-75mph average speeds with low to moderate traffic, and over the life of my truck (about 10k miles) I've averaged right around 20.4mpg if the meter is to be believed.

Put your foot into it and spool up the turbos and that drops quick but if you get it up to a good speed and gently cruise it can get some really great MPG. I've found it dramatically drops off anything over like 70ish.

As a DD I think it is fantastic. If you need to tow more than about 7k pounds I'd go with a 5.0 or a 3.5 but thus far the 2.7 seems to be a really really nice balance of power, speed, and economic sensibility.

C17chief- You bring up some very good points in regards to the NA. I plan to keep this truck until the wheels fall off and I also put 25k miles at a minimum per year. My only hesitation is that I have gone the NA route before and have regretted it on numerous occasions. I want something that will tow adequately when needed which isn't often but does happen. The 2.7 would tow all I would ever need and return potentially the MPG I am looking for. But after your thoughts It might be a harder decision on NA.

Has anyone heard of of major issues with the 2.7 yet. I assume it is to early to tell.

I just ordered a 2.7 4x4 w/3.55 Lariat and I plan on using it for my daily commute (37 miles each way). Fits the bill for a DD for me since its majority highway. I only plan some light towing (5k max).

I had read several claims of great mileage on different forums and decided to find out what I could get. This was a 50+ mile drive, about 1/3 city, 2/3 highway - driving it normal as I would have my Chevrolet Silverado. Very happy with the mileage.

Def something to think about. I was pretty sure I'd go for a 2.7 or 5.0 initially. 2.7 became favorite on the surface from the way it drove for the MPG it got. Drove a 3.5na, and while it was no speed demon in comparison, it was perfectly adequate, and as others have put, felt like driving a normal v8 truck from the past decade.

That being said, with the 2.7 at first I was just thinking about ok got the direct injection wildcard and prob will have to rebuild or replace 1 or both turbos at some point, so there may be some headache down the road but OK, maybe bearable for the fun factor. Then all that other stuff started creeping into my mind which made me change course. Even if everything stayed working mechanically, leaks and such are pretty much a fact of life. Doesn't mean it has to be significant, but they will happen. I mean how many old high mileage engines have you seen that are still bone dry? Nearly all I've ever had and seen start getting wet around the rear main, valve covers etc...vacuum leaks that may or may not be significant to cause problems/throw codes from aged rotting/cracking lines, etc. The 2.7 just adds a TON of potential with that stuff. Most worrisome to me is coolant and oil mixing blown head gasket style. I say style, because now besides just the head gaskets, you can have the same potential where the 2 block pieces join...then for coolant leaks in general, besides the usual suspects, you now have a front plate assembly which all the accessories AND water pump mount to which gets bolted on the engine as 1 unit, coolant passages in the exhaust manifolds now, etc. For a short time ownership, sure whatever, but I am not game for beta testing the longevity of a new more complex non standard setup like that!

I also think my shopping period might have come to an end finally as well. Just got a great offer on a magnetic supercab 302a with the 3.5...and obligatory 36gal tank haha. Should be picking it up Monday If they hold to it.
