Cold start knock.
Just recently my engine will knock as soon as it starts up for maybe 1.5 seconds and then stops if I shut the engine off it does not do it again. I have 105,000 miles on it. 5.0 4wd
All these issues have recently popped up in the last 5k miles. Been thinking of trading it in and going with a Tundra unless this is an easy fix without dropping thousands. I have terrible luck with trucks. Last truck was a 2010 Silverado 5.3 that needed lifters, pistons and rings changed. Loved that truck as well.
Well.... it's probably about $3,000. It's quite the job. The easy way to prevent the rattle is to (if you have push-button start, not sure about key-start) place your left foot on the brake, right foot floored on the gas pedal and crank. It will crank for a few seconds, build oil pressure, and then stop cranking. You can start it normally after that and it won't rattle because oil pressure has built up enough to engage those phasers.
As far as ignoring it and doing nothing... I can't say. The vanes are slapping against the internals of the phaser. They say it's not damaging, but that's for you to be the judge. It doesn't affect a darn thing after it stops rattling because oil pressure takes over.
They do make spacers to do a 'phaser delete' but that's going to cost just as much because 99% of the cost is labor anyway.

I'm having a "rattle" on cold start after driving for a minute or so in my 2018 5.0. Lasts a few seconds and goes away. My dealer said the cam phaser issue is with the 3.5L and not the 5.0, has replaced the Exhaust VCT Solenoid per the DTC 0390 that the truck has. But that hasn't worked, and we're chasing the issue still. Is there a cam phaser issue with the 5.0's?
I had the cam phaser issue with my 2018 fixed in January, covered by warranty fortunately. The dealer said it doesn’t do damage to drive it until they could fix it, and I did to some extent since the appointment for repair took three months to schedule. I didn’t experience any issues by driving, and since the repair the truck has been running great. It’s a big job, they basically rebuild the entire timing system. I heard the repair costs $4,000 - $6,000, but that could not sure if that’s really true.
After searching, I did not find a definitive answer to this. My 2018 3.5EB has now developed the cam phaser rattle for the second time. The first was at just over 20k miles. I thought it was fixed for good. Now at 48k miles, it has come back again.
My question is does Ford have this figured out yet? Excepting this issue, I love this truck. It fits EXACTLY what I need (frequent driver with acceptable mileage for a truck, and a power monster to tow our boat at altitude in Colorado).
It sounds like Ford will cover the repair again (I sure hope so), but I’m spooked. If it were to fail again, I’ll assume a VERY expensive repair for a design defect will be on my dime.
Any experience here with multiple incidents with this? Not sold on finding a different truck to pull the boat but I’ll do what I have to do.
