Default Chipped Windshield

So i am on the interstate cruising along and BAM!! A rock smacks the upper corner of the windshield on my brand new truck. It isn't bad. The crack coming off the chip is less than 1/4'' and the chip can barely be felt with your fingernail. I took it in to Safelite and was going to let them do the crack repair but the guy tells me they could crack it worse and wanted 128.00 to do it. By biggest concern is i don't want the crack getting any larger. While i was there i had the guy just quote me a new windshield.950.00! He said this is mostly in part to the lane departure and reprogramming needed after it is installed. Has anyone had luck with the do it yourself chip repair? If so, what brand? I noticed most of them kits sell for around 20.00. Thought i may give that a try first but wanted feedback.

My deductible would be almost as much as the windshield. If i was going to go that route, i would just pay for a new windshield.

You don't want the windshield replaced unless you have to; it'll never be the same as factory. With a crack that small and out of view, I'd absolutely try the Safelite method first. Plus you actually get credit if you end up needing a new windshield, so no downside. And no, don't even waste your money with the cheapo kits. You need a strong vacuum to draw the cement into the cracks, to restore the windshield's structural integrity, and to make them invisible (or almost). I've tried that when Safelite wasn't available, and it was basically the same, so 35 bucks down the drain. Hope this helps.

Seems those seemingly insignificant chips grow to be large cracks on these Ford windshields.
I think sooner or later, you're gonna have to replace it.

Verify your insurance cost and make sure - while I also have a 'high' deductible, my windshields are $100.....

Just went thru this a couple weeks ago. Wife's car (CMax with a big azz windshield) caught a rock off a PU with mudders on, crack got bigger as the day went along. Estimate from Safelite was just under $500, and I had a $500 deductible. I coughed up the money as the crack kept growing and she kept putzing about it. After replacement , I changed my deductible on her car and my 150 down to $100 for about $40/yr increase in premium. Then we traded her car in on a Lexus, so those windshields are even more $$.

Some insurance companies will pay for a chip repair for free. It saves them in the long run from having to replace the windshield. My carrier offers it and I've used it a few times, so it's worth making a phone call to your agent or carrier.

I got a chip a few weeks after getting my truck. I didn't want to file another chip claim so I paid to have it filled, but it only cost me $50.
