Default CDF drum failure

Well, it looks like the CDF drum is failing on my truck. 2018 SCREW 2.7 EB with 150K miles. Had fluid changed before a trip to Tennessee in December. Before the fluid change, it had started to develop some hard shifts. Post fluid change, things were fine from DF/W to Pigeon Forge Tennessee. Low gear hard shifts came back intermittently. Took the truck back to have fluid levels checked and make sure everything was on the up and up with the transmission and the dealership said all was good. Unfortunately, it has been a steady decline ever since. Hard Shifts, dropping out of 10th gear going down the interstate, and a limp code for 4th gear out of ratio.

Now I'm trying to decide whether I have the trans rebuilt or replace it with a reman unit. Has anyone had any luck with any of the aftermarket transmissions such as the BD Diesel unit? The first quote I got was with a Jasper transmission and it was going to be about $7-7500 to replace it.

Default Same problem REBUILT best

I had the same CDF drum failure on my 2017 F150 3.5L at 101K. Found a great Transmission shop to do the rebuild which completely fixed the drum failure problem, where the sleeve slips up and blocks the proper flow of transmission fluid. A reman transmission could end up with the same problem again. I paid $7000 for the rebuild and it has been flawless since about 4000 miles now.

Default No warranty

Well with mine there was no warranty. It had over 100,000 miles and was already over seven years old.
But they did an amazing job. In addition I had a new engine installed and so far everything has worked amazing I hope to get another 150 thousand miles out of this truck now.

My ESP warranty just paid for a CDF replacement, lived in Vegas my entire life and finally won a bet.

I am following this thread and don't mean to hijack your thread but I am having the same issue. 2019 3.5L 4WD 10 speed wit 85K miles. Hard shift from 7 - 8. The shop (not a Ford garage) told me it is the CDF drum issue. When the mechanic drove it he said he felt a slight indication between 3rd and 4th gear as well and now it seems to completely skip 4th gear occasionally. Estimates were $9K for a new ford transmission install with 12 months parts only warranty OR $8.5K with a Jasper transmission with 3 year, 100K mile warranty. The mechanic said if I was going to be getting something new in the near future then now is the time to trade it in. It wasn't in my plans but if I did get something different I would probably look for a used 2023 or 2024 with the 5.0L.

I did stop and talk to a service advisor at the Ford garage and he wasn't very helpful. He told me that they don't get many vehicles in for the CDF drum, didn't exactly know what the fix is but it would probably cost $2-$3K to repair (undocumented of course).

I am leaning toward fixing what I got but would take advice if there anyone has any input.

Good luck to you with your repairs. If you prefer I start a new thread I would be happy to just didn't want to create unnecessary threads for the same issue.

Thanks

It probably is the CDF, when it will completly fail is unknown. so you can
1) drive it to failure which it may not fail and just stay doing what it is doing for a long time
2) trade it in, most expensive option but to many money is not an issue
3) new/rebuilt trans, typically in the $5-7k price range
4) swap out for a 23-newer salvage yard trans $1500-??

Most people if they like the truck repair it....even $7k for a new trans (the trans guy I use by me in MN is $4500 to rebuild the 10R with all the updates) is less than a $60k plus new truck. A few options there for you, only you will know what the right choice is.

The ford replacement is pure overpriced trash vs a reman. A complete reman trans with convertor is $3700 jobber. Book calls for 14-18 hrs labor. Assorted supplies another $300.
Ain't no way I would let a dealership do the work. Its like hiring a painter to do a plumber's work.

Already decided if I went repair that I wouldn't use Ford and I appreciate your comparison. Thanks!

I am strongly leaning to the repair with the Jasper rebuilt. Better warranty and besides I really don't if you can completely trust that the Ford replacement having the drum that fixes the problem.
Thanks for the response.
