Question Cat removal

Ladies and gentlemen, Washington state is going to get rid of emissions testing in 2020, so my question to everyone is - is it worth it to remove the catalytic converter? Pro's and cons?

If you pull them off, you're still violating Federal law. They actually do help substantially with air quality. And why do you want to remove them - just to be cool?

Tvsjr, I heard they rob power, which increases fuel consumption. and....
Techrep, wasn't aware they were federally mandated.

I will have to look into it a little bit more, as our state really doesn't follow all federal laws, were a bit extremely liberal here. Thanks for the input guys.

When I was a kid I put an off-road x pipe on my mustang. I thought it sounded pretty cool but it was loud. Lost some torque on the bottom end. And the fumes were pretty bad. I wouldn’t do it now. My Borla exhaust on the truck is loud enough for me.

While I would not do it (especially if still under warranty), if you do, it would probably be necessary to have it appropriately tuned (if you can find anyone to do it) to take advantage of any gains that might be there.

Get high-flow cats, keep it legal, gain some performance.

Catalytic converters USED to rob power back in the dark ages of the '70s and the '80s but modern high flow ones don't (with the possible exception of very high performance engines). If I were you I'd just leave them be. Here in Ohio once a vehicle hits 25 years of age it's exempt form eCheck in the counties that have it (mine included).

Thanks everyone, not having to deal with non-cat vehicles and not knowing much about them, glad this forum is here.
So sounds like they don't really rob enough power to warrant the removal, so guess I will keep them in. didn't care about sound, just removing something that doesn't need to be there.

Isn't that quote backwards? Usually liberal equals more laws and regulations to deal with....??
