I have the same sound on my 18 5.0.. dealer had it for a week going over all the sounds I complained about and said its all normal.. I can tell you it sounds like the noise is coming from the trans.. at least on my truck.. but it does sound like engine ping and its driving me nuts because mine just started doing it this week after 12000 miles. I have all ways run 89 and 93 alternating back and forth so I'm not sure its fuel related. hope someone figures this newest noise out soon.

I'm sad to say my truck is afflicted by that too. And the description of 'nuts and bolts' is very precise. And I'm running premium now. Thought it was gone, but just last week when I drove with windows open for a long time (too hot), I was greeted by that embarrassing noise again, so it never went away with premium. Well, now I'm more bummed, since I thought it had to be the turbo wastegate clips, since sounds just like that. But if also the (non-turbo) V8s make it, it can't be the turbos either. Geez. It's basically the same rattling noise you hear at every cold start cycle (for about a minute or two), but a bit louder. Is it the transmission then? Or actual pinging, even with premium fuel? Now I'm baffled what it is. By the way, only 8,600 miles on my truck, but it has made that noise since day 1. The noise is very obvious if you're next to a wall, which is how I found out my truck still has it.

My 18 5.0 has done the same since day one of the first engine. Second engine started doing it around 1k miles. Between that rattle and the off throttle rattle, it’s just an expensive Maraca.

I’m confident it is pinging now. I just ran through a tank of premium (93) ethanol free and switched back to regular (87 with maximum 10% ethanol) and its pinging like crazy. Not sure I want to go through the trouble of having my truck in the shop to have an engine replaced only to have more issues... things just don’t go back together the same way they came apart for some reason.

If you run low octane gas you will for sure hear a lot of pinging. I switched to the highest octane and it runs and sounds a lot better. One tank isn't enough I would take it down as low as possible on the current tank and then fill with premium. A little pinging isn't going to hurt anything.

Ethanol fill up and ping will be gone.

The owner's manual states some spark knock is normal and non detrimental, but it sure is annoying as hell.

Yup... This is what the manual says (2019 F150 Owners Manual - April 2019):

For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer. See Towing (page 285).

Do not be concerned if the engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if the engine knocks heavily while using fuel with the recommended octane rating, contact an authorized dealer to prevent any engine damage.
Guess my fuel budget just increased by ~27%

I found that when the summer blends came out that mine started pinging a lot more. When it was cold i could run 87 and i wouldn't hear any pinging. As soon as it started to warm up i could hear it. I switched to premium and its been quiet since.

Mines the opposite, sounds terrible on winter blend, even 93. LOR tanks too.
