Default Brake Controller

I have a 2016 F150 that did not come with the brake controller. Instead of having an after market brake controller mounted somewhere under the dash I opted to have the ford dealer install a factory brake controller. My question is, after the dealer flashes the computer to recognize the new controller should I now see the brake controller settings on the towing screen to know at what strength I am setting the controller? So far when towing camper or trailer I haven’t really noticed if the brakes have kicked in. There doesn’t seem to be a really big ‘grab’ in braking to notice the trailer brakes activating

Short answer, is yes. Without knowing your trim it will be difficult to direct you, but there should be a towing section on the dash screen. In here, it will tell you your gain.

In addition, the Ford controller has a +/- rocker on the right hand side. When you use this rocker, the truck should chime and a window should pop up on the dash saying what the current gain is. Options are 0-10 in 0.5 increments.

Slightly concerning that you have towed things large enough to have brakes without checking this setting. If you haven't, please attempt to manually apply the brakes. You should get a chime and a window to pop up in the dash, even if you are in park, as long as a trailer is connected. Based on how tightly you squeeze, it will apply a variable amount of braking. I would also advise you to get going ~10-15 mph with your trailer and manually apply the brakes with the controller to come to a stop without your trucks brakes. You should feel this grab. If you don't, either the controller was incorrectly installed or your trailer had bad brakes. Either of which is not great and should be corrected before you tow again.

An easy test would be for you to go out to your truck, start it in park, and hit one of the +/- gain buttons or actuate the slide lever without even being hooked up to a trailer.

If you don't get a pop-up warning in your gauge cluster stating "no trailer connected" there's a chance your dealer may have made a mistake during install.

This is definitely step 1. In my post above I'm assuming the dealer installed it correctly until the end of my post.

Thanks for the reply. The trim is XLT with the 5.0. When we purchased the truck we asked to make sure it had trailer brakes with the truck because of the size of our camper. After searching all over / under the dash and not see the controller, the salesperson assured us it had the trailer brakes. After pulling camper that weekend and noticing that there were no working trailer brakes, we went back to dealer to have it added and flashed to which I still haven’t seen anything on instrument panel for the adjustments which lead me to asking here to see if it was done correctly at the local dealer

I would suggest that you need to sit down and understand how trailer brakes work, and how you are supposed to set them BEFORE TRAILERING. You've now towed a few times unsafely, and that should be a concern for you and everyone on the road. Regardless of whether it was installed properly, you have to set the gain BEFORE you drive anywhere.

A simple touch of the tabs with the engine running will bring up a message on the screen to tell you it is programmed right. But it's still not SET FOR TRAILERING. You have to do that.

Also, if it's over 5,000 pounds or 500 pound tongue weight, you need a weight distribution hitch.

I’ve been towing campers for roughly 15 years. I noticed the no brakes when I started going. Salesperson was explaining it as more integrated. First time was my fault as there was no attempt for dealer to go over things and I didn’t press the issue. Everything I have towed with I have always added aftermarket controller but this time did not wasn’t to have something drilled and attached in a new truck. This is why, while not smart, I still pulled as arrangements were already made. Just left extra space for stops

There are many posts on buying the part yourself, easily installing it (plugs right in), then activating with FORScan. No need to pay a dealer for it.
