Bicycle Carrier vs Tailgate Pad
For those that like biking and transport their bikes, what do you use... a carrier or a mat on the tailgate? I have always just put my bikes in the bed of the truck but now that I have some actually decent bikes (Trek DS3 Gen5 and Trek Roscoe 8, with the wife having her own Treks as well) want to keep their finishes somewhat decent looking. Wanted to see what everyone thought of a tailgate pad and bicycle carrier, what do you use and what do you recommend?

I picked up a Velocirax carrier and it's been fantastic. Aside from purchase price and the fact that it is a little bit heavy to move around by yourself, it is been incredible. Incredibly easy to load and unload bikes.

I hate those pads... prefer the wheel racks like Kuat. If there is a 3rd bike it goes in the bed since I have a hard tonneau.
Ironically I go up to NC to mountain bike and my buddy that drives insists on using his tailgate pad even though a 2nd friend has a 3 bike Thule rack.

Kuat NV Base 2.0 all day. Our tailgate is stupid shaped so pads are weird. They work, but weird. Can lock up the bikes on a rack but not pad. To be honest though, your question really isn't F150 specific, this is more an inquiry for MTBR or PinkBike.

I recently bought a wheel rack for our 2 ebikes and it’s great. I like how it swings down to a 45 degree angle so you can lower the tailgate. I have a cab high cap on my truck so putting them in the bed is a pain. And like mentioned above they can be locked onto the rack.

Go with a Küat. Keep our locally owned company busy. They are solid and well designed for getting bikes on and off

I carry mine on a thule t2 pro xtr. it’s a little heavy but super solid. can still open the tailgate.

1Up > Kuat, though both are admittedly excellent.
Tailgate pads suck...hold dirt/moisture against the paint and destroy the finish unless you install/remove every time. Depending on how often you ride, it can be a real PITA.
