Any dealer I've had either told me to go to a glass shop, or had the glass shop van come to them - they don't do the work. Since it's not covered under warranty, unless you want to pay the dealer their rate (marked up from the glass shop), doesn't really matter. Insurance claims for replacement glass are warrantied, and many installations have a lifetime warranty on the installation.

Also, the glass is simply set on a bead that goes all the way around. In the old days, there was weatherstripping around it, but no longer, glass laid on a bead of sealer.

Default Replaced mine with OEM

I used safelite as USAA uses them.....

Found out that their (Safelite) Database is perhaps lacking, as per the questions they asked me about my options, they tried to install a glass WITHOUT the camera....which is needed for auto dimming on Platinum and !?

Actually took three tries for them to bring the correct glass, but they did a top notch job and I am a happy camper.

BTW.... after the replacement, I did NOT have to have camera recalibration for auto dimming..... worked just fine after install....AZPLAT

I got an aftermarket windshield installed, and asked them to ditch the sound screen. $325 installed through a fleet company that my work uses. I notice absolutely NO difference in sound. The company that makes the sound screen windshields advertises on their website that it cuts 3-9dB of wind noise out. That's really negligible, and I suspect the thicker plastic core (windshields are 2 pieces of glass with plastic sandwiched in between) is what causes cracks to form from small chips. My last truck had several chips that never spread, got one chip in my new windshield and instantly cracked. Maybe coincidence, but if you start looking it up seems like people with the soundscreen windshields get cracks more often.

Thanks for the info - this is the kind of feedback I was looking for! I agree that I think getting rid of the thicker plastic core and using thicker glass may help, which is what I had in mind with an aftermarket windshield. Do you know who made your replacement windshield and who installed it?

I'm not sure who made it but I will go check in a second.

The installer was someone that the fleet company called out so I am unsure of that as well. I believe it was just a local shop. Safelite quoted around $400 for a new one since I have rain sensing wipers. OEM would've been $550... I'm lowering the comprehensive coverage deductible on my insurance, $500 is too high since the comprehensive covers windshields with Geico.

***Just looked, it's a Benson Lamishield.

You can often get a separate glass deductible. Mine is zero.

I need to check into that as well. The more people I talk to down here, the more I hear of cracked windshields. Hurray for Corpus Christi...

Yeah, it varies with insurance companies and by state, but Liberty Mutual in MI doesn't. However, they do offer free repairs, when it's repairable. If the repair fails, then I get a free windshield.
