What I did (which may not be right for you) was put in a 3 position switch (On-Off-On), and connected it to a mercury switch in the tailgate as well as directly to ground, with the power coming from the taillight. In the mercury switch position, the light is off until you open the tailgate. In the other position, it's always on. For bedlights I used an overpriced kit that I wouldn't buy again, and the 3M adhesive peel off didn't last, but marine adhesive works great.
Do you really believe that Ford has more than wire harness? Look behind the driver taillight and examine the wires. You may not find a connector but you may find the two wires?
You probably will have to unwrap the harness down to the bumper area. Let us know what you find.
