Bed Extender Installation Help
Hey fellas,
Sorry to post a new thread on something so basic, but seeing as how I wasted the last two hours...help!!
1) installed the OEM bed mat. Looked great!
2) The directions told me to change the large bumpers on the Extender to the smaller ones (included). Even with the smaller bumpers the angle for the screws wouldn't work so I had to take the rubber bumpers off. Fail #1.
3) The middle large bolt won't screw all the way in?!?! At first I thought it was my Line-X which had coated the inside of the screw well. But I cleaned that out and still can't get it to screw tight. Fail # 2
4) Because the middle bolt/screw isn't tight, the push latch at the bottom/top won't lock flush. Fail #3
5) Then I realized that if the middle bolt is supposed to be flush, I'm not sure I'll be able to reverse it easily since I have a V series ARE cap. I think the top of the Extender will hit the cap hinge as I'm rotating it outward. With the middle bolt loose I can angle the extender inward as I'm rotating it toward me/the tailgate to avoid this hinge and c-clamps.
Beyond frustrated. Any advice from those of you who installed one?

So, a dealer installed a bed rug for me and I ended up fixing his screwup on my bed extender (installed them upside down and reversed) and dealt with some similar issues. I had problems getting the large bolts in. One of them had a burr and I used a die to clean it out. But, I am of the opinion these threads may be non uniform on purpose so the bolts will not rotate when adjusting the bed extender. Either that or they had very poor quality control when they were made.
In any case, i would suggest cleaning up the bolt threads with a die, then installing them with loctite. As far as the bumpers, others have expressed similar concern but like me, when they are pushed back into a stored position, they stay put and stay quiet even though they aren't locked into that position. I thought about grinding away some of the bed rug which you could do with your liner but I just decided to leave it alone.

Anyone recommend going to a hardware store to see if they could clean out the screw well and help tighten it? I honestly don't have the tools to do it.
Or should I go to a Ford dealership? I purchased the parts through Fordparts.com and not from a local dealer. My dealership isn't really helpful but I could try others.
