Default Bad Differential Carrier Bearing

Next week the rear axle assembly is getting changed in my 2015 with just over70,000 miles on it. It has a bad differential carrier bearing on the left side. The outer wheel bearings and pinion bearings aren't making any noise, just the carrier bearing on the left side. It seems it must be a flaw in the bearing as the rest are fine and it's relatively low mileage for a bearing failure. The rear was serviced once previously with a synthetic fluid change and I don't tow heavy. I was going to just change the carrier bearings but decided to just change the whole axle as the metal has gone through the whole rear end and couldn't find anyone near me to rebuild the whole thing. It has the super 8.8 3.31 ratio electric locking axle and I found one for $1475 with 34,000 mile on it. Anyone else heard of this or am I just the lucky one?

My 2016 at a little over at 66K is having in the rear diff replaced. They have everything but, 1 part that is on backorder. They are hoping June but, who knows...it could be longer. Mine howls between 50 and 60 mph. Loudest being 55 especially if you are going up a hill.

I've seen a couple of posts that people have said they have had diff noise at 4K.

Howl at speed sounds like ring & pinion. Mine sounds like a bad wheel bearing at speeds under 40mph and gets quieter the faster you go.

I would just replace the carrier bearings checking for backlash and carrier bearing preload, inspecting for any other damage while you're in there. If it has contaminated the whole axle assembly, the gear oil would look like it was filled with glitter or (if a catastrophic failure) look like anti-seize.
