Default Backup camera darkness/color issue.

An issue started today with my 2017 XLT backup camera. Was fine when I left the house. Loaded something in the bed at Home Depot while it was raining. Afterward the backup view was darker and the color was off; kinda reminded me of an infrared camera.

I’ve attached a photo from this evening with a little daylight out. Display seems fine in every other mode. I tried opening/closing the tailgate a few times to no avail. My 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warranty literally expired 4 days ago so I’m hoping it’s not major. Thanks!

It may be a connector issue, but I've dealt with this a few times. You most likely need a new camera module.

I've read more threads about this issue in the past few weeks than ever before... but then maybe that's because I have the same issue with my front cam.
I'm taking mine to the dealership. I'll post up with the results.

My 2020 is doing this, seems moisture driven.

It was POURING when I loaded the bed, so I wonder if moisture got in somehow.

I checked earlier this morning and it was still dark, but not as bad and the colors seemed better. Just checked again and it’s definitely gotten better.

I had this same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Before you take it to the dealership, check the camera connection. Take off the panel on the inside of the tailgate (8 screws) and find the connector that attaches to the camera assembly. Pull it off and check for moisture, then put it back on nice and tight. I did that and my issue has been resolved for a few weeks. Quick and easy check.

Same problems with my 2020 XLT. Contacted dealership and they ordered new camera. My dad had same issues with his 2019 f250 lariat. Turned out it was the harness connector to the camera. Now we wait and see what really is the issue with mine.

After it seemed like it was getting better this morning, I had one more instance of it getting dark. Checked the connector and it seemed to be free of moisture, but it spent all day in the GA sun. Plugged back in and made sure it was tight; no issues since.

I’ll report back if the issue comes back within the next few days. Thanks everyone.

Happy to see this thread exists as I started having this same problem on my 2017 this week. Did some troubleshooting and I don’t have it fixed yet but I noticed where the wires leave the tailgate and enter the bed of the truck, a bit extra cord was hanging out and was getting pinched when the tailgate was in the down position. I never noticed it until now. Could a pinched cord lead to the same dark/blueish screen? It went full black for one drive but after I fixed the wire slack it’s back to dark blue. Haven’t tried the connector in the tailgate yet.

Replacement camera was ordered for my 2020 back in the end of May. Still backordered. Getting frustrated with the camera working when it wants to.
