APIM, USB issues
I just bought a 2017 XLT with Sync 3 (ver. 2.2). When I test drove it, the display appeared to look and operate correctly. I noticed that the previous owner had his android phone plugged into the USB the whole time. After I purchased and was driving home I was getting a constant message "The USB device requires too much power. Please remove". There was no device connected. Also the display was very unresponsive. 30 seconds after hitting a button it would then change. I thought this was related to the USB problem (maybe, maybe not).
I read here that the USB hub can fail causing this issue. So, I bought a new module, and tried it. (Note before trying it I disconnecting the battery hoping to reset something). At first it seemed to work, with no issues, except the slow response. I then tried to update the Sync to ver 3. I plugged in the flash drive, and after a few minutes it started and I got the message at the top "Updating System Software", after an hour, I got the message "The USB drive is not responding". I tried another stick - same thing. I did format to ext. I plugged in the old USB module it did the same thing. I tried the hard and soft resets - no difference.
Now I'm getting both messages "The USB device requires too much power. Please remove".and "The USB drive is not responding". I unplugged the USB module and I still get the messages.
My questions are?
1. Do you think my USB hub is bad?
2. Is my APIM bad?
3. If I buy a new APIM can I program it myself with FORScan?
4. Does CarPlay work with ver. 3.0, because I can only see Android Auto on my menu? (i have ver. 2.2)
Other thoughts?

CarPlay works with version 3.
I have not received this message myself, but I did have a USB hub that melted. It also damaged the connector. Resplicing those tiny wires in that tiny hole was fun, let me tell you.
Did you note any physical damage to the hub or the connector?
Next thing I would check is whether there's a short in the usb cable running from the APIM. To do that, you'll need to pull the APIM (attached to the 8" screen in the center console). The USB cable is obvious, as it has a USB plug on the end of it.

There was no physical damage other then a thick layer of dried up Coke (Cola) residue. So my guess is that maybe a short occurred in the hub. I ran a separate mini-usb cable from the back of the APIM and now I get no USB messages. So I think I will replace cable and hub. It did start the update (ver. 3.0) with this mini-usb cable ran, but after another hour I finally unplugged it. And The display-response is still very laggy, so I think I need a new APIM.
Where can I buy a new APIM? Can I program it myself with FORScan?
Thanks for the response.
