Android Auto and Waze Trick
Just upgraded to 2.2 and Android Auto - I love it, but also Love Waze. Was disappointed to see that your phone goes all black, while plugged into the USB.
However on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4, I found a trick to get Waze on the phone, while still running Android Auto. This works for some other apps as well.
Step 1. Turn on Waze, put in a destination. Start up any other app you want to test.
Step 2. Connect to Android Auto using the USB cable to the Truck. Your screen will go black.
Step 3. Wait to be connected to the truck and you have Android Auto running on the Truck Screen and the phone screen.
Step 4. Go back to the phone hit the Home Button. Might have to hit it Twice, it basically will give you the option to exit out, you don't want to do that. The second time you hit it, try to pull down from the top. You should get your Notification bar now. You can see the running things, that will show when you pull down the notification bar. You will see WAZE. Pick WAZE!!! Your Android Auto stays running, and now you have Waze on your phone.
Hope it works for you! Looking forward to Google Releasing Waze to Android Auto of course.
This was on Marshmallow 6.0.1
