Android Auto, no Sync 3 update needed!

Okay, not quite what everyone wants but it might tide those of us on Android (sorry IOS users!) and waiting for Sync 3 2.0 over.
With the latest update, you can use the driver-optimized interface right on your phone or tablet, with no special car hardware necessary.

Actually it is better news than you think. We were promised Waze coming to Android Auto and Android Auto needed to be updated for it. I am hoping this was the needed update and we will soon have Waze....hopefully the same week Ford wakes up and gives us the sync update.
So, I'm guessing this doesn't work on the small 4.2" MyFord displays?
I tried connecting my phone through the usb port and starting Android Auto and I could hear the connection ding, but the app just kept saying to connect to the car and not giving me any other choices.
I even tried with Bluetooth on and off, no doing. My truck knows my phone via Bluetooth just fine though.
Anyways, if anyone has any pointers, I'd be much obliged.

What happens when you connect via BT and launch AA on your phone? That's basically the gist of the article, and the 4.2" display shouldn't matter - the AA interface is on the phone, not your display in this scenario.
Same thing Lee. The app just says "connect to car" even though the truck tells me the phone has connected (Samsung note 4). The phone shows paired with SYNC, but apparently the app doesn't know about it. I updated to the latest version of Android App also, but no luck.
As a data point, I had iHeart radio playing fine through the sound system. Now for some reason it tells me it can't start it anymore. I also had google maps play directions through the sound system but now I'm not getting anything.
One other thing, maybe by design but seems kinda strange to me. If the radio is turned off, the phone will not connect, nor can I access the SYNC menu. I'm guessing the radio must be on for the sound system to pump the audio through. That's sort of annoying, since I do enjoy silence from time to time but still would like the phone to function through the sound system. But that's just a personal preference.
Now I'm more interested in getting AA working.

You need to be a little clearer when you say "The app just says "connect to car"". Which app on what device? Android Auto on the device? Once paired w/ Android Auto, if you go the the menu in Android Auto, do you see your car in the 'Accepted Cars' category?
Also, I'm assuming Android Auto is enabled in the Sync settings? Try toggling it off if it is.

Hi Lee, I didn't see Android Auto listed at all in the truck Sync settings.
As far as the message, yes it was when I opened AA, the main screen on the phone app shows a message in the middle of the screen that says "Connect your phone to your car". Looking at the settings, there are no accepted nor rejected cars. And I have the option to "Add new cars to Android Auto" turned on.
Before, In order to make iHeartRadio work, I connected the phone to the truck via bt, then chose "Search for new apps". That loaded the iHeartRadio app. I tried the same thing last night, but it said no new apps found.
Btw, thanks for helping with this.

The app ONLY works on phone. It does not display on the Sync 3 screen which is what most of us are all waiting for in 2.0. It says please connect to car. Using bluetooth or usb plug in makes no difference. The whole point is to use Sync 3 screen instead of phone. But if you have Sync 3 version 2, then it will work yes. Bottom line, those with Sync 3 v1.0 NEED a update to v 2.0

Np.
So, it sounds like your head unit has no idea about Android Auto (what version of Sync are you running, anyway?). That's OK. That was the theme of the OP's article. I'm thinking that AA on your device should just be able to use the car's Bluetooth setup for phone calls and an audio connection, but otherwise provide the rest of the AA interface on the phone itself. I'm not sure what else to tell you at this point, but will try and play around with this a bit more myself tonight and over the weekend.
As for iHeart Radio, etc..., that was probably a Sync app (? just going out on a limb...). I know on my truck (w/ Sync 3 v2), the Sync apps don't always show up. Usually, turning BT off on the phone and turning it back on will get them to at least re-appear, though not neccessarily work. Give it a try.
