Default Amount of fluid required for transmission fluid and filter change

Book says 13.1 quarts! and it states that is for a "dry fill" I assume that states if the torque converter and valve body and pump are dry. I am only dropping the pan and changing the filter and oil in the pan. How much will then be needed? That pan does not hold no 13.1 quarts of fluid.

TIA!

The last 6R I did took about 6.5 qts. for a pan drop, screen replacement, and refill. 13.1 is the total system capacity, which you would need if you were doing a flush.

If you go this route, just remember that you are mixing 7 or so quarts of good oil with used oil. Not sure of the benefit other than a new filter.......Over in the 11th gen section, we dropped our pans, put in a new filter and installed a drain plug in them (or new pan with drain plug) and would drain/replace 5 quarts of trans fluid every few oil changes.

Good point. Using 7 quarts to refill on a 13.1 quart system, it will take 5 drain and refills to get the original fluid to less than 2% total. So, every 30K miles would require 150K miles to eliminate 98% of the original fluid.

How many miles do you have on the fluid? If you only have 30,000 miles or so you don't need to change all 13 quarts. Just do a pan drop every 30,000-60,000 miles (depending on how you use the truck) and that will maintain the add pack in the fluid.

150,000 miles. Replacement of the filter and fluid is a required service at this mileage reading.

Not sure why you would even change the fluid that often-- my manual says 150,000 miles and there is no increased additional changes for "severe service"

I don't trust that. Every vehicle I've ever owned has a normal duty and a severe duty maintenance schedule except for this one. I call BS. Also Ford is known to have extended drain intervals on components that end up causing problems due to fluid breakdown.

And even if everything I said above is crap, doing a few drain and fills yourself every 30-60,000 miles will still be way cheaper than having the dealer do a flush at 150,000 miles.
