for me, its practicality. i need a semi luxury vehicle to fit in to take people to lunch, etc. while having interior room. Had an xlt before and the cloth got stained from "using" the truck and I cant have seat covers bc they look redneck.

$40-45k for a semi luxury vehicle w/ 4x4 and 4A that has great resale, etc helps make this truck a good fit for professionals that make over a 1/4 mill. At my work there are about 25 F150s out of 300 parking spaces occupied by VPs, SVPs and EVPs. Pay is 200k - 5M.
Which is nice, but you can't speak for me. It's just a truck. I don't feel right spending that much on it. I'd rather be buying houses or investing in travel or my daughter's future.

Investing for your kids is great - but at that level those other things are being done. Deferred comp, executive pensions, perks, etc. When one is making 300,400 or more, 45k aint much. And at $1M or more outside of a crazy expensive city like NYC, LA, etc, $45K is even less. Proportionally $45 every 3-5 years, traded in for $30k +/- at $5k per year is a tiny expense.

The other piece is it is NOT just a truck for people at those incomes. It is a luxury vehicle and more socially accepted as such nowadays. One often needs a certain caliber vehicle in those professional circles (just like nice suits, nice shoes, etc). That's kind of the point of the article.

My point is I don't see a truck and think "Oh, I'd love to have ____ and ____," I see "It runs. I rarely tow. Parts are cheap. I don't need the vast majority of those features." It's all personal taste. If you like all the bells and whistles, go for it. I really couldn't care less for most of the new things, so it's just purpose and cosmetics (if I was to get a new truck, it'd be a 15+, not a huge fan of 09-14 front end, but I'll wait many years for them to come down to a price I feel is worth it for what I would actually use). I'm not that much of a "pay for looks" or "get the extras" guy.

Bawhahahaha!! Says the guy who has a slew of "bling" mods below his post.

I think there are quite a few +200K folk who use the vehicle for work.
I think there are also quite a few who have a truck to pull their toys.
I also think there are quite a few who just like the look of a truck.
Usually +220K folk are a bit older and are prone to "nostalgic impulses."
I also think trucks are no longer work vehicles, but are very, very well appointed.
Finally, I think most who make north of 200K also have another vehicle ... or two.

This is true in my case I need a truck for business. I can speak from experience even with a very good income well over $200,000 I have put 3 kids through college have a mortgage etc etc one does not have enough to go out and buy new Porsche, Mercedes etc?! I do trade trucks every 2-3 years and get a totally optioned out XLT that is all I need love my trucks!

You are in the Toyota Camry "appliance" vehicle category. I.e. get to from point A to point B as cost effective and as efficient as possible.

To lots of Americans, their rides are extensons of themselves that reflect their personalities. Most Americans spend a significant amount of time in their vehicles as well.

My thoughts exactly. Totally overlooks or purposefully misconstrues the fact that most small business/single proprietorship LLC income is listed under the owners w-2 income not the EIN.

The mods are just for fun, though, and they don't even bring my total cost of the truck to $20k.
