Default Am I being overly cautious? Bilstein 6112 Shocks.

Just curious as to what condition everyone's shocks came in when they ordered them. I got mine today and was very surprised how they were shipped and what the parts looked like on the inside.. The box was not taped shut at all. just the 2 flaps that tuck into the box keeping it closed. My concern is that the shock fell out of the box during shipping and got damaged. And the one spring has a pretty deep scratch that I'm worried will rust quicker especially since the off-roading I do is at the beach so the salt won't help that scratch. Am I being over cautions here?

Customer service says: "Due to the weight of the shocks and the sharp edges on the lower mount cross bar these shocks always break through the box during shipping. Its unavoidable and yours look much better than what I usually see. Replacing them wont guarantee they will arrive any better and probably the boxes will be worse which will result in more scratches to the springs. We typically don’t guarantee cosmetics on suspension parts because it does not affect function and is hard to avoid due to shipping with the size and weight. If you want to try again I can set up the return and replace them when received if we don’t run out of stock today. We only have 6 left now and still processing orders from the weekend. But the next set will be the same or worse, luckily you are only one state away from our East warehouse or I would say they would be worse for sure."

My 6112s came the same way. Box wasn't taped shut, poor packaging. Kinda pissed me off. One of my springs also was scraped. I shrugged it off and
 installed them.

LOL I bet they email that to everybody. "Yours looks better than most" Love it. Dumb A@#$%%^$$$

Total BS. They know there is an issue pack you product better. I would never buy from them after hearing this. People and businesses do not know how to ship anymore. LOSERS.

Throw a little paint over the scratch and throw them on the truck. Your springs will get way more scratches than that if you use a metal spring compressor.

While it is a poor excuse on their part, it is most likely true the next one will be the same or worse. Hit it with some paint if you like, and run them.

I bought my 6112's from stage 3 and they didn't look like that at all. If Bilstein says that's normal due to weight, they may want to check out how BDS packages their stuff that weighs a lot. BDS has the best packaging for parts I have ever seen.

Thanks everyone! When you pay for something new it should be new. If you bought a TV from best buy and it got delivered all jacked up and best buy said that's how they all come would you keep it? I'm not so much worried about the spring as I am that how did that shock move around enough initially to cause that giant hole in the side of the box when the other didn't? Did a UPS worker accidentally grab the front of the box and dump it out? Who knows? What really baffles me is that they don't even tape the box shut. Just the fact that someone could go in there and just open it and steal anything out of it should be reason enough to tape it. I wonder if anyone has ever received and empty box.

I requested that they send a new spring and Shock. We will see what happens and what condition it comes in.

Different brand and cost but my Icon 2.5 as arrived 3 years ago, Foam packed.

The 2.5 CDCV rears just installed a week ago, zip tied and locked in via foam blocks and dividers.

Personally, I'd rather get shocks/springs with a scratch and maybe a hole in the cardboard box than have a bunch of foam to add to the landfill. Every set I've bought has had some collateral damage to the box. The shocks still worked fine.

If you want to see some damaged packaging, order wheel hubs and brake drums for a trailer. Those things looked like the were dropped off a three story building!
