Advice on engine choice
I know this forum is full of engine discussions, I've read a good amount of them, but each scenario is different and this is a big purchase for me so I would like to hear some opinions.
Is there enough of a concern over the 2.7's carbon build up to get a 3.5.
VS
Is there enough of a fuel increase using the 3.5 to warrant getting the 2.7
I plan on keeping what I buy for 10 years and 70% of my travel is highway.
We will be pulling a 5500 lb trailer a dozen times or so a year if that matters in the discussion
I have found several vehicles I am interested that are all 4x4 Screw xlt's with 3.55's and the only real difficult decision seems to be the motor.
This site is great and I appreciate any feed back. Hopefully soon my post will be regarding mods on my new ride.

Cant say for the 2.7 for highway economy, but the 3.5 in that configuration is 18-20 MPG. The 2.7 appears to get better MPG up around 24. Either one will get under 10 towing, so that would be a wash. I have a 16 3.5 4wd with 3.55 and it is averaging 17.8 for 17,000 miles with a little light towing of 500 miles or so mixed in. My highest tank was 20.4. My last truck was a 14 EB RWD with 3.15 gears and my highest tank was 24, and overall average with heavy towing of 4000+ miles over 63K miles was 18.8, and non towing highway was easily 20+.
I love my 2.7 xlt screw and i know it won't have any trouple at all pulling your trailer.
That said if I was pulling it a dozen times a year I might consider the 3.5 especially if there is a chance I might upgrade the trailer.

I'd say for fun (sound) get the 5.0. For economy if you're not towing or hauling heavy loads, get the 2.7.
The 3.5 offers the most torque and power, so its best suited to hauling family/towing.
Holly cow!
We live in the best of times.....great trucks and gasoline thats $1.98/gallon in rural Ohio.
And you want to quibble about 2.7 versus 3.5 versus 5.0 V8?
What you should be asking is how big is the fuel tank.
Thank God for petroleum engineers and hydraulic fracturing!

'17s now have port and direct injection, so the carbon build up should be a non issue.

Does the 2.7 have the 10 Sp, or just the 3.5 right now? The 3.5 with 10 SP will e a beast towing too since it can make up for taller gears when towing, and give the best in MPG with tall gears when just cruising empty.
BTW, that 36 gallon tank cost over $90 to fill with Premium up here! IL and WI are nearly $3 a gallon still for Premium. Going back to 87 next tank since I am not really getting any benefit from it.
