I had it done at the dealer. I'm not sure how they programmed it.

Where did you get your controller from? (How much did you pay for it?) From the dealer?

Default Dealer installed trailer brake controller

I had a 2019 Tacoma that was blowing it guts out pulling my small (3000 lb) travel trailer. A few months ago I traded it in and I purchased from the local dealer a used 2023 F150XLT 5.0 SCREW, 3:31 diff, without the factory towing package (love this truck). The previous owner had installed a decent hitch and 7 pin plug for trailer electrics, but no trailer brake controller. I couldn't find the under dash plug to connect a standard controller. The pigtail behind the coin holder is obviously incapable of supporting the current required by a trailer; it is apparently only capable of signaling something else somewhere.

I gave up, bit the bullet, and had the dealer install the factory controller. This included replacing the wiring harness to the back bumper, a new bumper cover, a new 7-pin plug, and replacing the useless coin holder with a gizmo that you pinch to adjust the trailer brake force. Additionally, the info screens now give the ability to store parameters for several trailers. All in all, quite a nice setup. The F150 barely notices that a trailer is back there.

Problem is cost me $700. Ouch. But it works great.
