I sometimes wonder if Ford changes the part number if they start to see a lot of Counterfeit product showing up in the market. There way of trying to stay a head of the Counterfeiters.

one would assume it would be the plug that will work thats readily available at the lowest cost.

Low cost, and applicable to many vehicle engine combinations. KM

So, what makes NGK better than the OEM Motorcraft plugs?

Also, what's the difference between NGK97177 Laser Iridium vs. NGK90495Ruthenium HX High Ignitability

What part of SE WI are you from? I'm in Janesville.

Burlington SE corner. An easy drive away!

"Also, what's the difference between NGK97177 Laser Iridium vs. NGK90495Ruthenium HX High Ignitability?" The electrode is a bit different (the strap has a ruthenium tip that sticks out). Supposed to last longer. The lasting longer makes no difference to me as I replace plugs at 20000 miles just to check the engine condition.I have a tuned 2.7 and use NGK 6510 LTR71X-11 iridium plugs, a step colder than listed plugs.
I will not say better, just more consistent in plug numbering, NGK is a Ford supplier. KM

This.
They're made to NGK standards and are consistent and long-standing part numbers - Ford makes requests based on getting the most plug for the least money - it's like buying a store brand that's made for them by a major brand, the secret sauce is always going to be the major brand exclusive even though their made-for-store brand is still nice.

I looked on NGK Part Finder, and for my 2018 3.5L they list the 97177 Laser Iridium (same as Rockauto).
For the 2020, they list 95927 Laser Iridium, and do not list the Ruthenium as an alternate.

Not sure why 2020 is showing different since it is the same engine...?
