5.0 shift question
I apologize if this has been posted before, but I haven't see anything on a 5.0. I have a 2016 with a 5.0 and 3.55. Since I bought the truck with 80 miles on it, it drops into higher gears at very low speeds. It will go into 5th gear at 31 mph exactly and doesn't depend on the rpm, incline etc. It'll drop back down to 4th if I hit 29 mph. This is really frustrating because it really bogs down in 30mph zones when I'm in 5th gear going 33mph. It'll jump into 6th as early as 41mph.
I test drove a 2017 3.5 ecoboost from a dealer a few months back and it's shifting points were higher (5th @ around 37-38 mph).
My question is for anyone else with a 2016 5.0 or another 2016, and is this normal for the truck to shift into 5th at 31mph? That seems really low even for the higher mph Ford is trying to get. The dealer has been zero help, I've only spoken to the office guys and they always seem unsure in their responses. They have said I can bring it in, but could take a week to look at it.
Thanks for any input

I have a 2016 5.0L 3.55EL rear end and stock 275/65r18 rubber.
Mine hits 6th at 49mph occasionally at 48mph when there's no wind. If there's a strong headwind or incline then it will hold 5th until 52-53mph. It downshifts back to 5th at around 44mph. I think it initially shifts to 5th around 35mph. but I can't be certain. I know for sure at 32mph it holds 4th.
I've been tuned since September, so I can't really check specific mphs. (well, I can, I just don't want to.)

Depending on how I am feeling, when this is bothering me in stop and go, I prefer the Sport mode which overcomes most of this. If you drive a bit more agressively supposedly the truck learns you and adapts the tranny shift points. My advise play with Sport and Tow haul, I prefer sport. Most all tuners change the shift points.
The truck really responds to good old fashion giving it throttle. I spent a few months driving mine really nice, I got 16 to 17 all around. Then I decided to drive it more like a Mustang and play now it is 15 to 16 and smile way more. Mine seems to just love a little more pressure on the throttle...if you combine that with the Sport mode you might be totally surprised. If that isn't working do the Raptor Steering Wheel switch and than paddle shifting from your steering wheel is an option :-)

Yours sounds normal to me. I have the same set-up.
The standard mode is really an economy map.
Change it to sport mode and it will hold the gears longer.

sounds similar in the 3.5 eco... sitting in 5th @ those speeds. I guess the difference is the lower torque band helps w/ the ecoboost when in lower rpm's?
Sometimes I find myself switching to manual shift or sport mode to make the adjustment.

The trans is tuned for the ecoboost motors that have way more torque at the RPM ranges you're describing.
I've found that a pedal commander helps with this by basically simulating more aggressive throttle manipulation. I guess the commander has essentially taught the trans that I'm an aggressive driver. It will still upshift at low speeds like you're describing but at the slightest tickle on the pedal it will drop back a gear or two.
Blame cafe standards and Ford betting big on Ecos.
