5.0 Phaser failures

2017 5.0 platinum
Just purchased a F-150 5.0 two days ago. It has 37k miles. Purchased 800 miles away from me. 200 miles away from dealer CEL on. Called dealer was told just replaced cam phasers so it might just be something loose. Popped hood couldn’t see anything continued home with no issues except slight stumble at at idle and poor gas mileage. Took to local dealer told code 0012 will have to recheck other work.
my question is does phaser replacement cure this code?

that is probably why ford recommends 5w20 to keep all these things working.

Respectfully,
While we appreciate ANY help or input at all, thanks, you sound like the dealer. It also sounds like you may have merely glossed over his lengthy but informative post(s).
For example, I have a '16 5.0 XLT SuperCrew that idles fine, runs fine upon distinct acceleration inputs but at a steady-state part throttle regardless of transmission gear and during slight tip-in anywhere between 1400 - 1900ish rpm the engine stumbles. I don't think it spark misfiring, more of a mixture thing. No codes are being thrown, and this has been occurring for the last 6 weeks.

I had this exact issue with my 16 XLT 5.0, ended up being a crack on the underside of the intake manifold. Caused a miss but not frequently enough to throw a code.

2016 f150 5.0
I've had problems with f150 rough idle and stalling at stoplights. I've had cams and vvt solenoids changed 4x same issue returns. A ford engineer had mentioned this to one of the ford mechanics that worked on truck but they didn't want to do the work. Is there a way to check this without removing head? If head is removed is the failed hole punch noticable to the naked eye? Thanks

My 2019 5.0 triggered the check engine light on Oct 14 with a code of P0022. After researching I cleared the code and did a fresh oil and filter change using Mobile1 oil and a Ford filter. The missing/stalling issue cleared up....for almost 3 weeks and then reappeared. The local Ford dealership said that without the code present they really couldn't do any digging into the matter. Standard "if there is no code, there is no issue" excuse.
I did find a dealership through contact channels that would take a look at it due to a know TSB on the described issues that the truck was displaying. Low and behold the evening before the truck was to go into the service dept. the engine took a major stumble and the check engine light to trigger again. This time I did get the code reader out and checked the code, again it was the P0022.
Got the truck to the dealer service dept. on a Tuesday morning and picked it up Saturday afternoon. They replaced the phaser solenoid and gasket which had to be ordered in. I was so impressed with how quiet, smooth, and steady the truck ran. Brought back memories of the day I drove the truck home on the day it was purchased...so smooth and sweet.
But then: when I got home I had to jump out to enter the key code to open the garage door. That's when I noticed that my inside the cabin super smooth and quiet truck now sounds just like an "idling diesel" when standing on the passenger side front of the truck. I haven't driven the truck since it was pulled into the garage on Saturday because it has been raining, and the dealership did such a nice job on a fresh detail of the truck I didn't want to get it dirty. I will be driving it later this morning, so I'll have to listen for new noises.

2016 F150 5.0 cam phasers
As with most motor "issues" (and all motors have issues) these problems with the Phasers are few and far between. The internet would make you think more have problems than don't.
While I agree we should talk about them and be aware of potential problems, folks shouldn't be worried about it and sleep well tonight.
The odds are in your favor in not ever having a problem with them.

P0012/P0022 are over retarded codes for both Banks 1 and 2. It has jumped time. Stop driving the vehicle. The best and easiest way to tell would be to monitor the Actual and the desired timing for each bank with IDS. If it were one bank it could be a solenoid issue. Being set as both banks means that the crankshaft correlation has slipped. First thing I do in any of these Coyotes is check the oil level. Many come in not even showing on the stick due to the long oil change intervals.
