Default 4x4 or 2WD

I'll be purchasing what I know will be a 15 F150 3.5 EB XL or XLT crew Cab regular bed with tow package in the next couple of weeks, and will be my daily. Right now I drive an 08 Exploder XL 4x4 which i will be trading in. I do tow a boat albite it's a 17.5' STRATOS 176Xt. I live in hill and snow country up here in North Jersey, and i do go off the beatn' path on occasion to hit some ponds and lakes to do some bank fishing for bucket mouths. I'm not planning on lifting the truck except leveling it and throwing on some Nitto Grapplers to get some good traction, like I did on my Exploder. So upon reading this, what should i get? 4x4 or 2WD.

beings you are subject to any type of regular occuring inclement weather where you could possibly think of using 4wd i would be inclined to get it. Certainly its more of a selling point in your area opposed to somewhere down south.

4WD is the only option in my opinion. I don't think a truck is a truck without it, but I live in the inter-mountain west.

It does result in a hefty MPG hit, but you recoup costs on resale around here so its not as big as it seems.

Drive a 2WD truck in even a LIGHT dusting of snow, and you'll quickly realize how valuable 4WD can be!

Cost is always a concern as it should be, but if you can honestly afford it, go for the 4WD. Need it in a 2WD and not have it, you'll always regret not getting it. Using it the first time you need it and you'll thank yourself for getting it.

I’d imagine in actuality you would get by just fine in 2wd. I’ve managed just fine in central NJ for the last 14yrs in my 03 2wd (bought when I was living down south still). Even going to or from work in the middle of the night or right following the bigger snow storms, where the roads have not yet been plowed has been a non issue.

That said, unless you are after a stripper XL, get the 4x4 in this area. I was watching 2wd XLT and Lariats for a couple yrs before picking one up recently (moving south again later this yr), and with filter set to 100mi, there are only 15-low 20’s available at any given time, TOTAL! Of course add in XL and that adds tons of base white w/steelies work trucks. Compare that to hundreds of 4x4’s to more easily find what you want and more competition for your business. Unless you plan on moving somewhere where 4x4 isn’t as big a deal, you’ll get it back on the backside vs lowballed for an unpopular config.

So you are telling us that you live in the snow country of New Jersey and asking us if you should get 2WD or a 4X4? That shouldn't even be a question. You need 4X4 for the occasional time that you will wish you had it. End of story.
