3G to 5G issues
does anyone predict any problems with the 2018 models? Looks like there may be some issues when 3G is phased out.
They don't mention Ford in this article.
Just hoping my Fordpass isn't affected & won't lose the ability to start the truck through the app.
3G networks will disappear this year — and that's bad news for your car. Here's why (msn.com)

My Wife's 2018 Honda Odyssey Touring got an OTA software update this past week that enabled the 4G modem in their telematics system.
Apparently they were smart enough to somewhat future proof their radios.
MultiBand cell modems are pretty standard these days. Just have to flash the firmware to enable or disable capabilities.
Honda said that if you don't run the update before mid February, you will have to go to the dealership to have the telematics unit replaced.
Apparently these cannot be updated via USB and since the OTA function will no longer work, replacing the unit is the only option.
I don’t really know but suspect nobody “upgraded” a 3G radio to LTE with an OTA firmware update. More likely the radio was always LTE capable that Fordpass and other bulk users have finally made arrangements with carriers for data on LTE.
Some automakers provide free LTE radios to subscribers of their services. Some charge for the upgrade. Last I heard there was a class action lawsuit against Lexus for failing to provide any path to LTE/4G.
I remember when analog cellphone service was turned off in 2007.

Mobile phone OEMs do this all the time. They buy cell radio packages, most have a license restriction and have features disabled... keeps costs down.
When you buy say a Qualcomm X50 modem package, you can license it to only run on 3G/4G LTE, or you can open up the license and enable 5G.
So yes, you can upgrade a modem with an OTA firmware patch to enable new features and cell bands.
