I have a 2017 F150 Lariat with smart keys and push button start. However the key fobs that came with the truck only have 3 buttons (Lock, Unlock and Alarm). I would like to upgrade to the 5 button key fob to pick up the tailgate unlock and remote start functions. Is this feasible? Is it just a matter of adding the 5 button key fob or would I need to do some software reconfiguration via Forscan ? Any insight would be appreciated.The truck has the Sync Connect option with remote start functions but I would prefer using the key fob.

There is a procedure for joining new fobs in the manual. No software needed.

I guess my question is whether I can mix a 5 button FOB with the existing 3 button FOBs and if so will the two additions functions will be available (tailgate release and remote start) ? I hate to drop $100 on a new FOB only to find it will not work with the truck.

Did you buy the truck new or used? The 2017 Lariat came with the 5 button FOB p/n 164-R8117 pictured below. You can program up to 4 FOBs to the truck. I purchased a brand new spare off ebay for $77 and programmed it to my 2017 Lariat using the instructions that I watched on a youtube video.

I bought the Lariat used last summer from CarMax. It came with two three button FOBs. If the five button was standard on the Lariat hopefully that means I can simply add another FOB and it will work. However it may mean that the 2 original FOBs were lost and the replacements took up the last 2 slots. Is there a way to remove a key FOB from the system?

Go into the My Key on the dashboard menu. If the admin key says 4, then the two original key FOBs are still programmed to the truck, along with the 2 replacement FOBs. If so, you will need to have a dealer purge all the programmed FOBs from the truck's memory.

I show 2 admin keys and 0 My Keys. It looks like its time to purchase a rebuilt 164-R8117 FOB and give it a shot.

I'd go back to Carmax and tell them that you want the proper fobs.

My 18 Lariat only came with the 3 button fobs. I paired a new 5 button fob for the same reasons, and paired successfully (the truck recognized it as paired), but it does not function at all. I gave up, hope this helps.
