Default 2017 Ford F150 XLT NA

Bought my 2017 from Enterprise car sales back in 2018. Can’t beat $26K for a truck with less than 40K. I wanted a basic truck that I could haul my kids in and also take stuff to the dump if needed. It has no frills: no backup camera; no fancy radio; no butt AC. I love it, wife hates it. I do wish i had more towing power. Not fun to have my truck screaming at 4500 RPM when going up a hill with my trailer. Other than that, no complaints.

How many miles are on your F150? 113K
What configuration did you purchase? 2017, supercrew, 5.7 bed, 2WD, XLT, no idea on gears
Any engine/mechanical related issues? Nope
Have you made modifications? Side rails, tonneau cover, Skanda ballistic tactical seat covers, tailgate assist actuator
What do you use your truck for? Daily driver
Do you tow with your pickup? I tow a travel trailer (GVWR 3500 lbs) and a kayak trailer.
What fuel mileage do you average? 15.2 mpg
Any complaints regarding your truck? Struggles on the slightest hill and the rear end sags when towing my travel trailer. Volume button switches media source.

curious as to your gear ratio. maybe post your door jam sticker, and folks can pick out the setup? regardless, cool setup you've got there!

What Id like to know, is what "hill" means. Can you give us a location so we can google map it and see the type of hill.. Or do you remember the degrees you were at from your dash?

Im looking to do EXACTLY this but Im a reg cab, so I wont have quite so much weight. Also, any tanks fuil when this happens in the camper? That can make a huge difference, say for example you water tank is full. I suspect you are empty..

as for your sag, what I plan to do is add air bags.. Ive done it before and it is not tough to do at all.. I suspect you are not even "levelled" based on your love for the basic set up.

Another question Im interested in.. why does your wife "hate" the truck? Sorry I know Im not replying to the OP...

It is what it is with the na 6..

BTW I love my blue jeans Xl reg cab for similar reasons, I bought with 160k on it and paid under 12k.. it looks new, drives new, and its fun modifying it. I even like how it sounds with stock muffler when I get on it. Maybe you can fix what your wife hates? You could add seat cooler, heater, different shocks.. lots of things, but all cost money. Nothing you can do about torque band of the na v6 though.. Intake manifold is waste of time, no programming will move the torque band.. about the only thing you MIGHT be able to do is cams.. but youd be trading off mpg and probably driveability with no load. If your wifes opinion of the truck is important, youd need to trade in for a turbo v6 or a v8. I think the v8 is likely gonna be a great motor at high mileage so Id go with that over turbo and save some money by buying a high mileage truck that was cared for.

Gear ratio would affect low speed but with a 6 speed transmission its putting the engine at highest hp rpm.. which would happen regardless of what gear you have.

So from a dead stop, a high ratio rear end would help... but I could be wrong, maybe someone can school me, but I think no difference at highway speeds.. although he didnt say highway, Im making assumptions here. Sorry if I misgendered you.

Ok Ive rambled enough

Since the onset of Covid, I've been spending a bit more time working from home, (I know others have been as well. fortunately i'm back onsite much more now). So I wasn't driving my truck so much. So I said to Wifey, why don't you take it out (when going to Costco, Fry's, etc...). After which I noticed quite a drop in my avg MPG's. Yeah, she figured out "sport" mode... I called her out on it, and her reply was "yeah, well I like to get going where I'm going.... is that a problem??" uh, er, no dear.... prior to that, I prided myself on the mileage I was getting.... What can I say, Wifey-pooh has a lead foot... :-)

As far as the sag: how heavy is the tongue on that trailer? Do you have a ton of weight in the bed too? My 20’ Airstream is bigger and about 1000 lbs heavier and I still don’t even squat being setting up my Sway Pro WDH. I’d figure out your tongue weight numbers (find a cat scale), how much weight you have in the bed, passengers, etc and subtract that all from the payload number on your door sticker and see where you’re at.

That truck, doesn’t matter which engine you have, shouldn’t squat that much with a 3500# camper, unless you load it way too front heavy / overload the bed.

edit: you say “volume button changes media.” Your clock spring is going bad.

His truck doesn’t look leveled but who knows. Just figured he didn’t as he left it mostly stock.

I am a huge 2.7 fan. As far as reliability goes, they are neck and neck now. Gen one 2.7's had the infamous oil pan gasket problem. If I HAD to say which one would be more reliable I would point at the 3.3L as it never had any problems. But I personally wouldnt get a truck bigger than a 2wd supercab with the 3.3L and I would want 3.73 gears.

This has been well debunked. Turbos are a well proven tech. Every 2.7 owner should expect 200k+ especially with good maintenance.

2.7L, 3.3L 3.5L and 5.0L all have cam phasers. The 2.7 and 3.3L, and to my knowledge, the 5.0 are not known for cam phaser issues. The 3.5 EB is known for it. As always, change your oil regularly.

What configuration did you purchase? 2021 Reg cab 2wd 3.3L 3.55 elocker 101A.
Any engine/mechanical related issues? Nope
Have you made modifications? Tints, running boards, F150 Sport rims BFG AT2's, tri-fold tonneu, back rack, factory key pad self installed.
What do you use your truck for? Daily driver, hunting in the fall, occasional towing.
Do you tow with your pickup? 2800 lbs pontoon boat with lots of wind resistance at 70+mph, occasional local towing compact backhoe on trailer ~4000 lbs.

Any complaints regarding your truck? None. Its a n/a v6 so, theres a bit of an understanding there. But its very quiet. Great mileage on 87, even get 16mpg towing my pontoon.

All in all great truck. I would have bought the same truck with a 2.7 if it were there. But I have no complaints about the 3.3, and it gets great mileage, has adequate power.
