2018 XLT with Base Engine
The new base motor is the 3.3L Ti-VCT or naturally aspirated motor. It replaces the older 3.5L N/A motor across the Ford line (it's in the new explorer for example) and has a touch more power and torque than the outgoing motor. It is also a DI and MPI setup.
I would say better all around - however it is very similar to the older 3.5L.
do you mean the ecoboost or do you mean the N/A motor (or Ti-VCT if you prefer)

He definitely has sport mode as covered, get him to try it. And I'd try a tune to, the shifting and behavior changes can be noticeable without even accounting for a little bit of a power increase. Probably a lot less expensive and time consuming than swapping trucks this soon
I suppose "moves real good" is a relative term.
