Default 2018 suggestions

Hi Everyone,
New here and looking for a little help figuring out what I want. I'll be ordering a new 4x4 Lariat SCrew in the next couple weeks and I'm researching all the options.

Haven't decided between the 2.7 or the 3.5. I've only driven the 3.5 so far and it was great, much better than my current 5.4. I'll get back to the dealer and drive a 2.7 soon, but for those who have driven the 2018's, how do they compare? I rarely tow anything or put more than 500 lbs in the bed.

Next question is on wheels and tires. I'll probably upgrade immediately. Is it common for the dealers to offer to buy the stock wheels and tires back? If so, what's a reasonable price?

Last question for now at least. What's a good deal? I've used carsdirect or truecar in the past to get an idea of what a good deal looks like, but I don't think there's a lot of data available on 18's yet. Appreciate any guidance.

I have a 3.5, but I'd prefer the 2.7. It is a very peppy engine. Only problem is I like the truck with an elocker, 36 gal tank, and trailer brake controller for occasional towing. 2.7 with those options is close to the same price as the 3.5 with max tow package.

But if I was ordering, I'd get the 2.7.

Before you order, you may want to work out how low of a price you can get on a truck in stock. Your experience may have been different, but I haven't seen any dealer get real desperate to give you a low price on a special order. On the other hand, they want to get trucks off of their lot inventory, especially at the end of the month and the end of the year.

I wouldn't order a 2.7L for a truck unless I was just looking to get the best bargain price.... that's just me. I also sought out a 5.0L, because the dealers kept trying to sell me. Since I plan to keep the truck 10+ years, I didn't want to compromise on which engine I wanted.

I have a 2018 Lariat 4x4 with the 2.7. I ordered it specifically because I don't tow anything and really love that engine. I had a 2015 with the 3.5 and it was great but definitely prefer the 2.7 for my needs. I special ordered mine. My sticker price was $57855 which included the 502a package, moonroof, adaptive cruise control, 36 gallon tank and spray in liner. I was able to negotiate to $48K before taxes/tags. The key is to go to 3 or 4 dealers and let them compete for your business. It doesn't matter whether it's for an in stock vehicle or not, they all want your money. I went to four dealerships and let them all know up front that I was going to multiple lots and wanted their best price. I ended up with the dealership that seemed to offer the best after sale service and a sales guy I liked. I gave them the last opportunity to beat all the other prices and they did so. I then negotiated a bit lower with them after that. In the end, I believe I got a good price and the dealership seemed satisfied, as well. And I absolutely love the truck.

Thanks for the guidance. I'm certainly open to buying from dealer stock, but I tend to keep my trucks for quite a while so I don't mind waiting to get exactly what I want. The feedback on the engines is very helpful. I'm going to go drive both this week and make some final decisions.

Worst down-side to the 5.0L is the gas mileage. I have another post going about my "crappy" gas mileage, which evidently is typical/normal for a 5.0L 4x4. Despite what lots of articles and videos I saw say, the EcoBoosts do get quite a bit better gas mileage. My buddy bought a 3.5 EcoBoost 4x4 and gets 17 city, almost 23 highway. My city mileage is 13-14. That's a big difference, IMO.... especially considering the 3.5EcoBoost is more powerful than the 5.0L V8.

I'm averaging 20'ish mpg's city and the best I've gotten so far on highway is 24.8 mpg's hand calculated. I'm very happy with that and have about 1700 miles on it at this point. I definitely find the 2.7l quicker than the 2017 3.5l I test drove. But, I felt my 2015 3.5 was quicker than the 2017 3.5.
