2018 5.0 Regular,Mid or Premium what do you use?
while the manual in the chevy flatly states to use 87 octane
By the way I understand modern engine controls, as well as the cooling effect of direct injection( which is how they got the bump to 12:1).
However 12:1 compression is still damn high for 87 octane, especially if you will be running the engine hard.
hence the owners manual recommendation of premium fuel for these conditions.
There are more TC options than just those 2....there are several choices of traction control and stability control combinations:

Guess I just glossed over that in the manual. Which it is in the manual.
My 2014 and 2018 are the first trucks since my first new one in 1995 that I actually have had to open then manuals.
Every truck before these where just seats, a steering wheel hvac and the worst stereos on earth. Even my 2005 & 2010 fx4's were simple vehicles.
WTF!! I'm not afraid to admit that I had no idea I had that option in TC.
Seven years on here and I'm just realizing this.
I can only assume my 2014 didn't have Sport Mode in general, so please tell me, I didn't drive that truck for almost five years and didn't know that truck could do it.
Not knowing for nine months with this one is embarrassing enough.
Great tip my friend! Thank ya
Hopefully the results aren't like what we joke about while on the sleds...

The other few functions I was aware of.

OMG U still read PAPERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
It's the PDF age you dyno_saur
The way the 18' adjusts to the lower octane is through the ECU. The ECU adjusts the VCT camshafts and spark advance/retard to accommodate the lower octane. And probably a couple other modern magic tricks. The engine does have 12:1 compression, and that is too high for 87, at any temperature. Actually 91 is to low too. the ECU still has to make adjustments for that at 12:1. This is why everyone reports better performance from E85, which has an octane rating of 108, which is exactly what 12:1 requires. IMO, Just because you can run 87, doesn't mean you should. If you're not on a tight budget, get 91+, If you are buy the 87 and let the computer figure it out. No one is going to fault you for that.
I have a 2019 5.0 i was running 87 in it for the first few miles her a couple times pinging from the engine so I've switched to 91 non ethanol gas and it definitely seems to quiet the engine down and improved the mpgs around 2mpg gain.
