2018 5.0 engine failure while drving
Context: I was replying to the post above mine, and my suggestion solves most of the issues related to that.
I think the correct answer is that AS/S is NOT SUPPOSED to shut the engine off when it is running under power and the vehicle is moving. The messages popping up when the engine is killed seem to indicate that AS/S related is the issue.
I'd hone in on the comments that pressing the pedal is the point that the engine shuts off. If that's repeatable, it could be a simple logic conflict issue. Ex. erroneous sensor input makes the system think AS/S currently has the engine off. You depress the gas pedal, the system checks state and sees the truck is already in motion above 'x' mph, which is a no bueno start condition. Start rejected, message issues to put the truck in park then re-start.
That would be something that only a datalog during the event can diagnose.

the interesting thing is it doesn't behave like A.S.S. when you get the failure message because the battery light comes on and you have to recycle the whole ignition by turning it all the way off and starting the truck up again
If the battery light comes on as a failure indicator, the BMS has detected a >>control lead<< fault to the Alternator.
There are separate fault codes for those failures for opens, shorts and crosses on the control leads.

you have a VCT issue. trust me the first few times mine did it it popped up with AS/S failure please shift to park and restart engine.
eventually you will get a CEL for p0011/21 or p0012/22 its either the solenoid or the actual phasers that are bad.

5 times since 2018 .. 2 different motors .. new motor has less than 5k miles .. no codes
its a battery light as in the truck stalled .. no power steering .. once you recycle the ignition the light goes off .. no codes.. no soft codes.. no pending codes
