The taller the rearend ratio (the higher the number) the quicker it should be. In old school hotrodding, you always picked up some speed by switching out the gears for taller ones.
I think you meant shorter rear end ratio, higher the number
I agree, and i think that works if you have less gears.... but with the 10 speed and how extremely low 1st to 4th gear is, it might be a different case.
In an extreme scenario, think about accelerationg hard in 4LO.... it pulls hard at the very start and then not much after that...
I would have opted for the 3.55's if it felt faster than the 3.31...but it didnt... and both trucks i driven were the same trim an options... just my thoughts
I had a '17 Titan. The 5.6 V8 was plenty of power, but Nissan paired it with a clunky new, first year 7-speed transmission. Lots of complaints about shift points, feeling of being bogged down, a 7 to 3 downshift, shaking between 3rd and 4th, continually hunting between gears, have to floor it for a passing downshift. Multiple TSB's about the issue (just a revision of the same software flash). Nissan is clueless, just telling drivers to drive if 10,000 miles until the adaptive learning of the tranny finishes. buybacks, lemon laws. they bought mine back only after like 1300 miles. Some poor soul in Mississippi has it now.
In agreement, a 10 speed in a truck was the worst concept ever. No way I would even considered this.
On the flip side.....the 8-speed in the Ram 1500 paired with the 5.7 V8 seems to be a match made in heaven. Smooth shifts at the right points, no harsh downshifts, never seems bogged down, holds in 8th gear at higher speeds with plenty of power still.

I was going to order a 18 XLT se sport 5.0 373.I'm now considering a leftover 17 lariat 501a 5.0 373 with town mirrors and twin panel moon roof for about the same price. I think ford screwed the pooch on this.
Another thing is you can hardly hear the sweet sounding V8 on the 18,it's way quieter.
with respect - I don't think you guys are remotely close to the pin on this topic:
The 10 speed is the future. EVERY GM and Ford truck (light duty) will have it. So, either figure out how to make it work for you or get ready to drive what you have forever.
A couple of things for the OP:
1. The 10spd allows you to cap the top gear. If you want to "only go to gear 7" (which is 1:1 - then you use the gear selector to electronically remove gears 8-10.
2. The transmission is designed to be efficient when not in load/tow - so, it skips gears and automatically tries to find the most efficient (not most torque/power) gear.
3. If you don't like point 2, you can select either Tow/Haul or Sport mode and it will use all of the gears and will hold them longer.
As an editorial note - I find my powertrain (3.5EB/10spd) to be the finest pairing of anything I've owned (including several lexus vehicles) There is just so much variability you can dial in.
Here are the Gear Ratio comparisons. You can see you get a modest increase in OD in 10....but, gear 9 is pretty much equal to gear 6.

That's too bad. The 6R80/5.0 combo is fantastic.

You can do this with the 6-speed as well, and have T/H or Sport modes.
that's 3.15 gears with an ecoboost that's only tuned...
3.73's are for towing on this platform, with the 10 speed you want 3.31's
You just re-enforced my point..thank you
Notice how with the 3.15, second gear can hit 60mph?!! Under hard acceleration, the advantage goes to using the engines entire torque curve for a longer period in 2nd. That means in 1st and second gear, the 3.15 with the 10 speed is almost equivalent to the 3.55 with the 6 speed...... so therefore the 3.73 with the 10 speed is geared way to low... Accelerate hard and by the time you hit 60mph, you are already well into 3rd gear....this is why it is and will feel slower
