Default 2017 F150 Heat Shield

My heat shield tore off while driving down the highway. I recovered this but don't know what is missing. You can see in the pic that there is some half metal piece still attached to the shield. Any ideas of what's missing and how it happened. Also is this part actually required? Thanks!

Heres what i could find.

A lot of people remove it permanently, especially if they do their own oil changes. I did on my '15, but so far have left it in place on my '18 and just suffer through removing/reinstalling when doing oil changes. I don't believe it is necessary. It may offer some limited protection from road debris, but other than that, it's not really critical to retain it.
