2017 5.0 electrical problems
I have a 2017 5.0 f-150 that I haven’t driven that much lately.. the other day I pulled it out the garage to run it (it hadn’t been ran in about a month) and it started up just fine. I drove around for a little bit, then went home to park it. After parking, I turned the truck off but the radio stayed on.. I thought that was strange so I got out, shut the door, and it never went off. So I got back in, turned the key on and off a few times, moved the truck a little, and shut it off. The radio went off but the AC control lights stayed on. So I started it AGAIN, and the dashboard, ac, and radio was all off and won’t come back on. The ac doesn’t work and none of the needles or lights on my dash move.. I’ve tested the battery and it’s fine, but I’m really not sure where else to look besides pulling out all the fuses and checking them, which I’m about to do right now
Start by charging the battery. All sorts of weird things happen with these trucks if the battery gets too low. If the battery is the OE it might be time to replace it. Get it load tested if it still acts up after charging it. This is a common problem during these COVID times.
I had something similar happen once. Truck sat for about a week. Started fine but when I put it in reverse the screen went black, radio shut off and dash lights went off. Drove it for a bit and everything stayed black.
Drove it home. Shut down re-start. Screen and lights still off. Started again as I was setting annoyed with my new truck acting up. Did something funny during the normal Ford logo on the screen so I shut it off went inside and had a beer.
Disconnected the battery and slow charged it overnight. Seemed ok after that. 1 month later I took my truck in for an oil change at the dealer and mentioned it to the service manager. They checks for codes and load tested my battery. Determined it was defective. Replaced it under warranty.
Long story short is the Ford battery is so-so quality. If it acts up don't just assume it's ok because it reads 12V on a voltmeter. Might tank to 10.4V during starting and cause all kinds of issues. Have it load tested. These trucks are super touchy about electrical current. My truck is a 2019 btw, so battery lasted about 1 year.
