2016 SYNC question (confused)
Hi all,
I have been doing research for months on upgrading my 4.2" screen to the 8" screen + adding a backup cam ect.. (i have the 300a). Just recently i saw somewhere that 2016 f150's ship with SYNC 3? so does this mean i wont have to do as much programming or swap out the apim? or will i still have too? I've seen a bunch of kits online but for $2000usd and that was sync 2 4.2" to sync 3 8"(im in canada) so im looking for cheaper ways, sourcing other kits or parts myself.
Any help is appreciated. Sorry if this has been asked before!
Cheers

I believe the sync 3 system you're talking about is only on the 8" screen for 2016-2017. You have the 4.2", so you still have the older regular sync system, and the system you want to install would be the 8" sync 3 system. So you would still need to source everything to go to the 8".
The 2018 and newer have sync 3 for both the 4.2" and 8". But even though that makes wiring much simplified, owners of 2018+ trucks still need all the components to convert to the 8" system.
When I did the conversion from 4.2" to 8" sync 3 on my 2015, I sourced everything through ebay and junkyards. I also did all the repinning/rewiring and didn't buy the conversion harness. I spent about $650 when all was said and done.

I believe that the newer 4.2 screens have Sync 3 software, however if you want to upgrade to the 8", you will need to replace the APIM because the screen is a part of it. The Sync 3 software resides in the APIM whether it's a 4.2 or 8. So you would be looking at a new APIM, front bezel, harness etc. Since you have a 16, the USB hub should be compatible. If you're looking for ways to save money, the route that Indy2015 took is the way to go.
